Concealing Stigmatized Identities: Costs & Benefits for Health

Research on the relationship between concealing a stigmatized identity and health outcomes has resulted in many conflicting findings. In the current talk, I present a theoretical model of when and why concealing stigmatized identities is likely to relate to better or worse health outcomes. I will review a series of studies examining components of the model, including experiences of discrimination, anticipation of stigma, salience of the identity, the difference between outness and active concealment, and spontaneous disclosure decisions.
