TESOL Journal editors

Starting in January 2019, Youngjoo Yi and I became the editors of TESOL Journal. We will serve a three-year term (2019-2021). At the TESOL conference in Atlanta, we had our first Editorial Advisory Board meeting, and met prospective authors at the Wiley publisher booth.

Workshop for educators at the Ohio Heritage Language Summit

It was an honor to be able to present a workshop with my colleague Dr. Glenn Martinez for teachers and administrators at the Ohio Heritage Language Summit here at OSU Dec. 9-10, 2018. Our workshop was “Identifying Heritage Language Learners and Creating Affirming Experiences”. The summit was organized to help educators with the implementation of Ohio’s new Seal of Biliteracy. Wonderful to see these opportunities and events to support bilingual students in Ohio!

Research presentations at the Language Policy and Planning Conference, August 23-25

I had two presentations with colleagues from UT-San Antonio at the LPP conference in Toronto. I presented my work on a bilingual program in Columbus, “Social Class and Dual Language Education”, and with David Martínez Prieto we presented “English Ideologies during Anti-Mexican Times: EAL Teachers as Cultural Mediators” (will be published soon as a forum article in TESOL Quarterly). Thanks David for the chance to collaborate on this exciting work!

Summer Institute for English Teachers from Mexico

We were very proud to host 87 public school English teachers from Mexico this July for a month-long professional development program sponsored by the Mexican Ministry of Education. A special thank you to the excellent OSU team, the program co-director Dr. Ivan Stefano, and the teachers from Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Durango, Michoacán, and Sonora.

Research presentations at the ISLS Conference, June 28-30

I presented two research papers at this year’s ISLS conference hosted at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. With Dr. Katy Henderson of UTSA, we presented “Translanguaging Pedagogy as Language Ideology for Bilingual Youth in Texas“, and I also presented on “Intercultural Awareness and Language Ideology Change: How Trumpism has Shifted Views of English in Mexico“.

American Association of Applied Linguistics conference, Chicago March 24-27

I presented two papers at the AAAL conference this year:

“Leveraging the Prestige of English in Indigenous Education, or How the Village School Got a New Roof” and “Intercultural Awareness of Young L2 Learners: Linguistic Differences through Power and Race” (with Lina Martin-Corredor).

I was also thrilled to see Kim Potowski’s plenary address on dual language education – always a strong advocate and brilliant speaker!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Presenting at the Purdue Second Language Studies conference with my good friend and mentor, Wayne Wright, two former star doc students from UTSA, Laila Aghai and Virak Chan, and current OSU doc student Jessica Somerville. Jessica and I presented on teachers’ orientations to translanguaging in a dual language program.
