Today we went to the market as our last spot before departure from Santiago. The market is crowed with people from all around the world. At the market we see different kinds of fruits and some of them are in cool colors I have never seen. The market is pretty similar to the one we have in my home town, but much cooler. At noon we tried the Peruvian style sushi which was super good too.
Overall in think Santiago is a beautiful place with mixture of South American and Spanish colonial culture so at many spots you might feel like your are in Europe instead of South America but in some place you suddenly realize you are still in the city of Santiago.
We will be soon going back to Columbus but I will never forget the adventure in Santiago. I will remember the street trees-sycamore which provide nice shade when we waked along Ave. Providencia. I will miss the old-fahsioned drink(peach and wheat) at street corner. I will miss the dogs as our companion during our walks. I think this city is such a fusion of different experiences. The point is that you can see everything in the city of Santiago instead of going to different cities to experience different ideas and cultures, which I think it’s cool, too. What’s more, I will miss passionate Chilean who helped us during this trip!
Momo, I think it is so true when you expressed how you can see the architecture from all around the world in just Santiago. It was also really cool that you were able to try Peruvian type sushi in Santiago. I thought it was great that we didn’t have to leave the country to experience the food and culture of the neighboring South American countries. Having the Peruvian sushi in Chile is a great example of that since it is essentially a combination of three different cultures.
Exploring the fruit and vegetable market was quite the experience but I thought it was a great time to find out where the commonplace resident of Santiago probably goes to get his or her weekly groceries and everything was so affordable (although it was very crowded!).
Overall I thought our tour guide was super enthusiastic as well and he definitely made this trip more fun!
Hi Momo,
I think you are right that the market is so crowed, which is similar to many market in China. We even get lost in the market. But the fruit in there looks good although I didn’t taste them. Some fruit is strange that I never see. For instance, I saw a yellow fruit just like a mango with some thorns. I think it is interesting.
Coincidently, I also had a meal of Peruvian style sushi in a restaurant which is near our hotel! Indeed, it is delicious and different with Japanese sushi. The rice is much smooth. Although I still like Japanese sushi, I think trying some new thing like Peruvian sushi is not bad.
I agree with you that Santiago is a fantastic city combined with different culture. You can see some building is in European style such as Santiago Cathedral. You can even find some Chinese food there. However, there are also some obvious characters in this city. For instance, the tallest skyscraper we went together is a landmark of Santiago. In addition, Chilean have their own currency, Chilean Peso(although I think it is hard to calculate whenever I pay the money).
I miss the drink with peach and wheat, too. It is so sweet. And I also think Sergio is really enthusiastic as same as most Chilean.
