Warehouse

The boxed spices are then transported and stored in the company warehouse in the UK for distribution. The transportation and continued storage of saffron spice is also a delicate art. Saffron is extremely light and moisture sensitive so it must be well sheltered.  Saffron is stored in sealed, metal cans. For transport, the cans are put into boxes that are sealed again. The boxes are marked with a fragile warning but carried in general cargo. Transport can take place by ship, truck, or railroad. Once the saffron arrives at the warehouse, it is stored there for a variable amount of time. The freshness of the spice is tested by putting a pinch of saffron into a cup of water and observing the size increase of the stigmas and the discoloration of the water. The process of transportation must be handled very carefully, because the saffron can be spoiled very easily.  Because of its price, it is also very likely to be stolen.  Many precautions must be put into place for the protection of the spice.  It must be kept at the right temperature, humidity and ventilation.  This delicate transportation process also adds to the cost of the spice (“Saffron”).
