First Semester Reflection

I have really enjoyed my first semester here at Ohio State. Being in Scholars has helped me meet many mew people through the mentors, living together, and the trip to Chicago. It has taught me some of what this university has to offer its students. I plan on continuing to be involved in some of the student organizations such as the Accounting Association. I hope I get more involved in my core classes, so I can really see if I enjoy my major. I am also starting to take Spanish classes, so I can get a Spanish business minor. I would like to study abroad to Spain at some point while I am here to further complement my Spanish minor. Studying abroad is one if my G.O.A.L.S. so the Spanish class I am taking next semester is one step to get closer to that. Overall, being in Scholars has shown me a lot about this campus and I cherish what I have learned from it.

Columbus To Do List: Part 2

Columbus Commons

Jack, Matt and I visited the Columbus Commons the same day that we visited Topiary Park and the Scioto Mile. What makes this park unique is that it is not like a normal park. It is more of an open lawn area with a pavilion that is used for events. I found this space to be in a very good spot. It is in the middle of the city and is a great area to host large events like concerts. It is easily reachable either by driving or through the bus system. Another useful attribute of this park is the underground parking. Having the parking underground helps make for space for the park. I also learned that anyone could rent out this area if he or she has an event they want to host. While this park to me wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing, it was a very practical space.

Another park that I visited was Goodale Park. I did not get any good pictures of Goodale Park because it was night when I went. Goodale Park is what I think of when I think about a park. It is a very large open area that contains many walkways, trees, a gazebo, and even a pond. While parks like the Scioto Mile and the Columbus Commons are unique and interesting, I like parks like Goodale the most. I like these parks the most because they are very calm and remind me of the parks that I have back home. Another thing I enjoyed about the park was the location. I liked that while was close to downtown, it was also adjacent to a neighborhood, making it easy for kids to go there.

Park of Roses

The final park that I went to was the Park of Roses. I went to the park of roses with five other people when we went to do the Park of Roses Fall Cutback. This park seemed to be the biggest park that I visited mostly because the park was connected to the Whetstone Community Center. Because we went during the Fall Cutback, we got to interact with all the plants that were in the park. We saw a multitude of plants there and even though the roses and other trees and bushes were not blooming because it is winter, I could still imagine what it is like to see all of the roses that come in the spring and the summer.

While Goodale Park is my favorite park because it reminds me of the parks that my friends and I would play at when I was younger, I thought that the Scioto Mile was the most beautiful. Seeing the city along with the river was very cool to see. Doing this project made me see that there are a lot of beautiful and unique parks that Columbus has to offer. This also made me think about what else Columbus has to offer like the food and concert venues. A recommendation that I would give to someone visiting these same parks is to go on a nice day to truly enjoy what each park has to offer.

For our Columbus To Do List Jack, Matt, and I decided to do the nature and outdoor adventure theme because we thought it would be interesting to see what the parks in Columbus had to offer. I knew that Columbus would have parks, but did not think that it would have so many parks so close to each other and the city. By choosing this theme I hope to learn about the areas around Columbus as well as see what the parks have in them.

Topiary Park

One of the parks that we visited was Topiary Park. Topiary Park is found east of the Scioto River, right next to Cristo Rey High School. What made this park unique was the topiary inside of it. There were multiple shrubs and bushes that were trimmed into the shape of people, animals, boats, and other objects. I have never seen a park like this before where the focus is on the shrubbery. Most parks that I have seen are either big, open green spaces or have playgrounds in them. I would recommend this park to a friend mostly becasue of how unique I think it is compared to other parks.

Scioto Mile

Another park that we visited while we were out was the Scioto Mile. I remember walking through this park while we were on the Columbus welcome downtown tour. What I like most about this park is how it utilizes the minimal space it has along the river. I really think it is interesting how people decided to make a park in such a confined area. The park seems small and skinny, but happens to be very large when you consider how long it runs. The view of the city along with the river while in the park makes for some very cool pictures. I would also recommend this park to a friend because I really enjoy the way that the park runs between the river and the city.

Life on Campus

From what I have seen of Ohio State so far I really enjoy it. My classes and floormates and are very intesting and I really enjoy them. Welcome Week offered a lot of opportunities to meet new people as well as learn about what the campus has to offer. My classes have not been what I thought they would be. Half of my classes have over 200 people in them which is a major difference from what I saw in high school. This is not necessarily bad, but I am just not used to them yet. I feel that while all of these experiences are new to me, I am adjusting to them well. I didn’t expect all of the opportunites to get involved to be as available as they are. Now I realize there is a lot that this university offers and it is best to get the most out of what you are given.

My Life

I am a first year undergraduate student in the Fisher College of Business majoring in accounting. I am also part of the Architecture, Landscape, and City scholars learning community. In my future I see myself working as a public accountant. I am from Cincinnati, Ohio and went to Elder High School. I am not in many clubs or organized activities outside of class but one of my goals is to becoem more involved in what OSU has to offer. In high school I was involved in service activities and would like to do the same thing while I am here. While I might not be the most involved and outgoing student, I am always ready for what problem or opportunity is thrown my way.
