ODA AND EXTENSION TEAM UP TO DISTRIBUTE FREE GARDEN SEEDS THROUGH OHIO VICTORY GARDENS PROGRAM

Cuyahoga County residents can pickup seeds at the Cuyahoga County Extension office during Earth Week, Monday April 22nd through Friday April 26th. Soil samples for a $30 soil test can also be dropped off during this time.

$1,000 reimbursable grant opportunity – LEAP Conservation Fund

The local LEAP Conservation Fund is offering up to $1,000 reimbursable grants for projects incorporating native plants. Apply by 5pm, Friday, April 12th.

Non-profit organizations and government entities are invited to apply. For-profit entities and individuals are not eligible to apply. Applicants may request up to $1,000 per project. Grant funds are dispersed via cost reimbursement. Invoices or receipts for project costs must be submitted for reimbursement. The Conservation Fund plans to award 5-8 proposals depending on applicant pool and total funds requested. Priority will be given to current LEAP members and member organizations. An organization may submit more than one application. The project period is 5/1/2024 through 4/30/2025. Funds may not to be used for overhead or administrative expenses. Travel expenses are not eligible. Food and promotional items for events are not eligible.

Projects may be for on-the-ground restoration, research, or public programs. Projects should focus on rare or threatened species and/or protection and restoration of area biodiversity. Projects must demonstrate meaningful impacts and show tangible results at the close of funding cycle. If the project is part of larger effort, please explain how your project contributes to this larger effort.

Central State University 10th Anniversary Celebration – Land Grant Open House April 26th

Application Open – 2024 Dig In! Community Gardener Training Program

The application for the 2024 Dig In! Community Garden Training is now available.  The application closes on April 1st, and the link to apply can be found HERE.

This training is scheduled to take place on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm starting on April 9th and ending on June 4th (9 weeks total).  Please see the tentative schedule HERE.

Class will take a hybrid format. This means that some classes will be virtual via zoom and, as the weather warms, some classes will be in person at our office and to be determined gardens.

The cost of the Program is $50. Notice of acceptance into the program, as well as instructions for submitting payment, will be sent by April 4th.

Live Stream, Lunch, and Learn: In-Person Viewing of Online Organic Vegetable Production Conference January 26th

Ohio vegetable growers are invited to gather in Wooster, Ohio, on Friday, January 26 for a one-day in-person viewing of the 2024 Organic Vegetable Production Conference (OVPC).

“Live Stream, Lunch, and Learn” is open to any local producers using or interested in organic production practices. This year’s talks focus on tunnel production. The local event begins with coffee and social time at 8:30 a.m. and programming from 9a.m. – 3p.m., including live-streamed and recorded sessions from the OVPC virtual conference, along with roundtable and networking opportunities with other growers and Ohio State personnel.

There is no cost to attend thanks to an Ohio State grant from the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research, but participants must pre-register by Monday, January 22. Register online at go.osu.edu/ovpc24 or call the Wayne County Extension Office at 330-264-8722.

With this Bygl Alert we would like to give an overview of the diagnostic services offered by the C. Wayne Ellett Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic.

The C. Wayne Ellett Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic (PPDC) moved to The CFAES Wooster Campus about a year ago. We are located at the OSU CFAES Wooster Campus on the second floor (Selby Hall, room 234) of the Department of Plant Pathology. We continue to provide diagnostic services and support for plant and pest-related problems for a wide range of stakeholders (agricultural/green industries, growers and agribusinesses, health care professionals and the general public).
