Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:

I intend to work toward global awareness by pursuing a varying course load that looks at the world from different perspectives. This starts with fulfilling the global studies, social diversity, and cultures and ideas general elective requirements. I can gain a cultural perspective on OSU’s campus with the numerous cultural and ethnic clubs. The Multicultural Center and Center for Languages, Literatures, and Cultures regularly plan events and showcases. Beyond this, I intend to gain a global perspective by traveling abroad. There are numerous opportunities to take classes or intern in a foreign country. As I am currently enrolled in German 3, I can further my education through a summer program in Germany. This will allow me to converse with native German-speakers and immerse myself in authentic German culture.

Original Inquiry:

There are not many opportunities for research within my actuarial science major. However, I can use research to explore other disciplines that interest me, like economics. By participating in economic research at OSU, I can enrich my studies at OSU and learn more about the data collection and interpretation side of economics which most courses do not explain in deep or intricate detail.

Academic Enrichment:

Currently, I am planning on majoring in actuarial science and minoring in business analytics. I chose to major in actuarial science because I enjoy the practical application of mathematics. I chose the business analytics minor to learn more about the way a business functions. When I graduate and get a job as an actuary, I hope my minor will help me understand the business side of an insurance company and allow me to better communicate the actuarial work to workers in other departments. In addition, I am considering minoring in German. I have always found the German language to be interesting and I hope to learn more about it and German culture while at OSU.

Leadership Development:

I am involved with the actuarial club at OSU. I have attended many of their meetings, including internship and job information sessions with various employers. This has helped me develop by showing me what a job as an actuary or a consulting actuary would look like. It has shown me what characteristics and qualities a hiring company looks for in potential employees. Additionally, the club has provided me with numerous opportunities to network.  Overall, I find the actuarial club to be especially beneficial with professional development.

Service Engagement:

In terms of service engagement with the Columbus community, I hope to get involved with peer mentoring at local schools. I also looked into pen pal programs with elementary school students. I find working with kids to be the most satisfying because of the ability to truly impact their lives and futures.
