Year in Review

My first year of college has been full of growth and change, and a lot of ups and downs. Going in, I couldn’t wait for independence and a fresh start. I had gone to a pretty small high school and only a few of my close friends were also attending OSU. Being very shy and introverted, I was eager (but nervous) to face the challenges of going to such a big school and making new friends. Through living with other HSS members, I was so incredibly lucky to meet some of the best people I have ever met. It was nice having similar career goals and taking the same classes, but the people on my floor got along especially well and I loved hanging out with them.

In terms of academics, I struggled with time management and balancing time between school work and socializing. I was taking some GEs, as well as Chemistry and Biology which I struggled with the most. Although my grades are not where I want them to be, I am still proud of the work and adjustments I put in and my improvement from first semester to second semester. Next year, I’m excited to take classes that I’m more passionate about, like Psychology, Anatomy, and Music.

At first, I was so caught up in new friendships and stepping out of my comfort zone that I sometimes found myself wanting to go home to take a step back from it all. Throughout the year however, I learned that it’s important to make time for myself – getting sleep, eating well, relaxing, and just doing the things that I love. I’m very passionate about helping others and I look forward to pursuing my Health Sciences major. Unfortunately this year I wasn’t able to do all the activities that I wanted to, but now that I’m more settled in I hope that I can participate in all the extracurriculars I’m interested in. Overall, I have definitely become more self-confident and more self-motivated, and I can’t wait to continue to grow as a person.

G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.

Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.

Academic Enrichment: I was able to email former Health Sciences Scholars student, Megan Massey, and ask about her experiences and journey in applying to dentistry school. We talked about grades, as that is obviously an important part in the application process, and Meg offered me some helpful advice in boosting my grades for next year and to reach out to my professors and TAs to get the help I need in more rigorous courses like Organic Chemistry and Biology 1114. However, she also assured me that grades aren’t everything and that extracurriculars are just as important. With that, I really want to try to join more clubs and organizations on campus during the next few years, such as pre-dental club, as well as other clubs that meet my personal passions and interests. Overall, I found that it’s important for me to be well-rounded and participate in other activities that can help me stand out as an applicant. Meg and I are continuing to talk through email, and possibly planning to meet up over the summer in Columbus to talk more about dentistry!

Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

Service Engagement: After participating in many service events throughout high school, I was eager to continue volunteering in college. During the beginning of the semester, I visited the Garden of Hope with other HSS members. We helped out there by pulling out weeds, harvesting vegetables, as well as removing the plastic linings to prepare the fields for the next harvests. Although I’m not really someone who likes to get their hands dirty, I found this experience to be enjoyable and rewarding. Overall, I loved being able to get some fresh air, meet new people, and work together to give back to cancer survivors and their caregivers. Back home in Cincinnati, I visited a nursing home called Brookdale Senior Living. There I spent time with residents by sharing stories and doing activities/crafts. Since many of the residents have dementia or their families aren’t able to visit them often, I truly enjoy talking with them and getting to know them on a more personal level.

About Me

My name is Katrina Raneses and I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am a first-year here at The Ohio State University majoring in Health Sciences on the pre-dentistry track. After earning my bachelors degree, I plan on later receiving my DDS (Doctorate of Dental Surgery) to become an orthodontist. I am also in the Health Sciences Scholars program as I am hardworking, passionate about healthcare, wish to be part of a close-knit community with people of similar interests and goals.

Outside of academics, I love music, writing/journaling, and spending time with friends. I have been playing the violin since third grade and have always enjoyed singing. I played violin in my high school orchestra for all 4 years, so I hope to be involved in some sort of orchestra or singing group on campus. Throughout high school I was also passionate about community service and leadership, which I wish to continue at OSU. Additionally, I plan on joining pre-dental and other healthcare-related organizations to further explore my career path.
