Structure: Process

Statement of Intent

For this project, my intent was to use linear perspective techniques to create my dream office space using simple and complex forms by relying on constructed cubes/rectangular prisms. In addition to making our dream office layout, we had to include an architectural detail, an object that defies gravity, an object that signifies an activity such as work or play, and a personal item that is no larger than a person within the dimensions of 100-350 square feet. In this assignment our materials included a mechanical pencil, Bristol paper, Micron pens, eraser, tracing paper, grid paper, tape, ruler, triangle measuring device, T-square, scissors, cutting knife, cutting mat, and drawing paper. My goal for this assignment was to accurately draw a studio space with complex objects I have never drawn before in one point perspective.

Ideation

For Exercise 1, we were asked to create two compositions, one that is simple but composed, and the second to be complex with layers, line weight, and intentional communication. My simple composition is the image on the left and my complex composition is shown on the right.
For Exercise 2, we were assigned to construct a still-life composition from anywhere in/around Hayes Hall. Our main goal for this exercise was to use triangulation to help find angle measurements.
In class, we worked on making a one point perspective room. Unfortunately, I struggled quite a bit with making my lines parallel to one another, so I had to make four grids before my final one was complete.

Iteration and Production

These three images show my final composition iterations for Assignment 1. We were told to start off with a rough sketch of our office layout, and as we progress on, to start making our lines sharper and neater.
Final composition: Assignment 1

Description: When I started this assignment, I knew the one thing I wanted to incorporate was a loft space. But, I knew the loft wouldn’t be enough to make my office fun and exciting, which is why I decided to include the disco ball. For my office, I don’t want a serious looking space, I want it to be cozy and fun and I feel like the disco ball adds a ‘fun’ energy to the space. In addition to the disco ball, I added the checkered rug to continue with the ‘high energy’ room aesthetic. Overall, I enjoyed this assignment, even though I am not an experienced drawer. I loved learning about new drawing techniques and how to further my interest in designing/decorating rooms.

Architectural detail: indented ceiling

Object that defies gravity: floating chair

Object that signifies an activity (work or play): desk

Personal item: disco ball

Reflection

Although I am not a great artist, I did enjoy this project quite a bit. Throughout this unit, I learned new ways to construct compositions on paper and on online applications. I was able to learn how to construct objects by the use of perspective drawing, triangulation, contouring, and measuring. I do believe I struggled quite a bit with the concept of triangulation because I wasn’t able to correctly comprehend the angle measurements. However, I do think I excelled with making my one point perspective grid, although it did take me four tries. This project has taught me that my first draft isn’t going to be my best draft. At first I spent a good amount of time on my first rough draft, but as I progressed I realized that my composition will come together in the end, even though it may take three to four drafts. I do think for the future, I should add a bit more detail to my final compositions and use thinner pens to start. Overall, I enjoyed assignment one and learning about how I can improve my artistic ability for the future.
