Background

Have you known a peer that was killed in a motor vehicle accident?

Unfortunately, most of us do.

According to the Center for Disease Control:

  • Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death in teens aged 15-19 years old at 35% of all deaths among this age group.

  • In 2010, about 2,700 deaths in teens aged 16-19 (300,000 years of life lost) and 282,000 emergency room treatments were due to car accidents.

These numbers have put teens at 4 times the risk of being in a car crash per mile of driving compared to drivers 20 years of age and older.
