Global Awareness:
As a part of Buck-I-SERV, I went to Vinton county in order to promote education beyond high school as well as other post-secondary options. I went to 5 different schools across various ages to encourage kids to think about their future. And my experience in Vinton county really enriched my awareness of the world. It is a very rural community and different than the life I know and my view of the world has been expanded by seeing a different facet of life.
Original Inquiry:
Since the end of freshmen year, I have been a part of GENETIS (Genetically Evolving NEuTrIno TeleScopes), a physics research group. The group’s focus is on using genetic algorithms to create better antennas for the purpose of neutrino detection. I volunteered for one summer and during a school year and then participated in the physics undergraduate summer research program for my second summer on the project.
Academic Enrichment:
Along with getting all A’s in my major and minor classes, I have been selected during both my freshmen and sophomore year for undergraduate physics awards. I received the Helen Cowen Book Award in 2019 Jack Smith Award in 2020. Along with taking honors variants of every class I have been able to in order to strive for academic excellence.
Leadership Development:
I am currently the president of Knitting and Crafting club. I have been a member since my first week as a freshmen and have stepped up into a leadership role for the club. In past years I have been an assigned mentor to teaching crochet to new members, along with helping the officers to set up events. Throughout Sophomore year I served as Vice President of the club and after honing my leadership skills have been elected as President.
Service Engagement:
Along with my time in Buck-I-Serv, I have also helped lead service events as a part of Knitting and Crafting Club. Each semester we try to do a service project and “Buckeyes Make Blankets” where we have made 40+ blankets for events to donate to children’s hospitals. During this event, we invite non-crafters and non-club members in order to teach them how to make these blankets and contribute to the community.
