G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness

As one of the G.O.A.L.S., Global Awareness is probably the one I am least focused on now. It’s not that I find Global Awareness to be unimportant, but that I find that I first need to become fully aware of my current surroundings before expanding my visions and views. I first want practice with the ability to properly process my surroundings on a smaller scale, so that when I do expand my view I will have a clear understanding. I believe that taking my time is better than the alternative of expanding my view too quickly and having an improper understanding.

Original Inquiry

Original Inquiry is a category that greatly applies to me, as I am in the physics major. Original inquiry and research go hand in hand and research is of great importance to physics. I am not currently a part of any research group, but I have been attending SPS (Society of Physics students) meetings since the start of my time here and at those meetings, professors or students come and talk about the research they are currently working on. I would like to be a part of a research group by the end of my sophomore year, but am currently just allowing myself to grow in other aspects.

Academic Enrichment

Academic Enrichment is an interesting category, for it is the category that is most dominant to a typical college student. Academics are what our lives are centered around as students. Currently I have done well, I’ve gotten the high on some of my midterms and have all A’s in all of my classes this semester. My only goal for myself is to do my best, because while I ideally would have all A’s throughout all of school, holding perfection as a standard is simply unhealthy and I trust myself to try my best without that standard.

Leadership Development

My current goals for leadership development involve continued participation in various clubs I am in and taking bigger roles in them. Currently I am a member of Knitting and Crafting club as an active crocheter I have taught a variety of new members how to crochet and even some experienced crafters who have never tried to before. I hope to continue in this active role in the club and hopefully maybe become an officer next year. It’s given me an outlet to share my talents with others which in turn enriches my own.

Service Engagement

When it comes to service engagement, my goals are simply to participate in a few service activities every few months or so. Currently I do not have a strict guideline of how many to do or when, but when opportunities arise I tend to join in. For example, crafting club has a big event where we make, as well as teach those outside of the club how to make, security blankets for Project Linus. This year I am showing up early to help set up. I think this a good example of the service engagement I strive for, because an opportunity to help appeared and I took it, but I do not have any personal standards of how much engagement I have to do.

Year in Review

Global Awareness:

As a part of Buck-I-SERV, I went to Vinton county in order to promote education beyond high school as well as other post-secondary options. I went to 5 different schools across various ages to encourage kids to think about their future. And my experience in Vinton county really enriched my awareness of the world. It is a very rural community and different than the life I know and my view of the world has been expanded by seeing a different facet of life.

Original Inquiry:

Since the end of freshmen year, I have been a part of GENETIS (Genetically Evolving NEuTrIno TeleScopes), a physics research group. The group’s focus is on using genetic algorithms to create better antennas for the purpose of neutrino detection. I volunteered for one summer and during a school year and then participated in the physics undergraduate summer research program for my second summer on the project.

Academic Enrichment:

Along with getting all A’s in my major and minor classes, I have been selected during both my freshmen and sophomore year for undergraduate physics awards. I received the Helen Cowen Book Award in 2019 Jack Smith Award in 2020. Along with taking honors variants of every class I have been able to in order to strive for academic excellence.

Leadership Development:

I am currently the president of Knitting and Crafting club. I have been a member since my first week as a freshmen and have stepped up into a leadership role for the club. In past years I have been an assigned mentor to teaching crochet to new members, along with helping the officers to set up events. Throughout Sophomore year I served as Vice President of the club and after honing my leadership skills have been elected as President.

Service Engagement:

Along with my time in Buck-I-Serv, I have also helped lead service events as a part of Knitting and Crafting Club. Each semester we try to do a service project and “Buckeyes Make Blankets” where we have made 40+ blankets for events to donate to children’s hospitals. During this event, we invite non-crafters and non-club members in order to teach them how to make these blankets and contribute to the community.
