Peer Mentoring: GEs & Acting (Weeks 3 & 4)

College is starting to sink in for the freshmen, and grad school applications are starting to sink in for me. Though our lives are rapidly changing, at least the GEs haven’t changed in the past three years. It was also nice to be sat in a classroom with students who, like me, don’t necessarily enjoy math or science. I empathized with the (in)audible groans when going over these categories, but at least this week it will be a little more “fun,” if they enjoy literature, history, etc. This discussion is also making me reflect on where I was at this point in the semester three years ago. I thought I’d had my academic plan polished and ready to make into an honors contract and then a graduation application.

Though it’s clear that class, busy schedules, and scheduling are setting in, I was pleasantly surprised by how many of paid attention to my remedial acting skills while explaining how (not) to talk to professors. Having two years of experience and knowing some of the skits a little too well, this went as well as it could have from my perspective. To me, it’s a preparatory exercise for next week: These skits get the peer mentors in front of the class to prepare us to be in front of the class to talk about our freshman-year transition challenges.
