Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Being an honors student is about more than the title or the specific dorms, it is about becoming a better person by pushing oneself both in and outside of the classroom. The honors G.O.A.L.S. represent values which all honors students should strive to fulfill. The G stands for global awareness, which means learning to be more accepting and informed about cultures around the world. I plan to fulfill this by studying abroad and taking courses where I will be able to learn about other cultures. I am a Spanish minor, so I plan to take classes on the history of the Iberian Peninsula as well as Latin America aside from the Spanish language class. I hope to be able to study abroad in Spain so I can see what it is truly like to be part of a culture different than the one I grew up in.  The O stands for original inquiry, which means understanding the research process by engaging in projects throughout campus. I plan on not only volunteering in a lab my freshman year, but eventually creating and carrying out my own research project by the time that I graduate. Research is my planned career field, so I plan to be heavily involved in the innovative research that goes on around campus. The A stands for academic enrichment, which means taking the most interesting and challenging courses at my disposal here at the Ohio State University. I plan on taking the honors version of the general education requirement in courses that genuinely pique my interest such as the honors Russian literature course that I am taking first semester. A challenging and well-rounded curriculum will prepare me to think outside of the box and better understand different points of view in my eventual career. The L stands for leadership development, which means being ready to take on leadership roles in college and beyond. I am currently involved in the Ohio State triathlon club and molecular genetics club. Both of these activities help to push me in both my personal and academic life and I plan on eventually seeking leadership roles within these clubs once I have been a part of them for longer. Finally, the S stands for service engagement, which means I will also commit some of my time to giving back to the community. I currently do not participate in any community service organizations, but I plan on seeking them out later on in my college career in order to engage with the community and help those around me. Over the next four years I will strive to meet each one of these G.O.A.L.S. in order to get the most out of my education and to become the person that I desire to be.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. About Me

Greetings, my name is Riley Ogrean and I am an intended Molecular Genetics major from Cleveland, Ohio. I am very passionate about conducting research and hope to one day earn a Ph.D. in order to pioneer my own projects. My dream is to be a part of research advancing the treatment for those suffering from the form of muscular dystrophy called Charcot-Marie-Tooth, a disease that has greatly affected my family. On a different note, I enjoy thrifting as well as attending university sporting events in my free time. Go Bucks!
