Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I find the most important and interesting form of diversity to be diversity of thought. The color of one’s skin or one’s sex does not define what he or she thinks. Unique backgrounds foster the best forms of discourse, not only because it incorporates people who all look different, but who different ideas, experiences, and beliefs that I would like to learn from. The less divided we are by race or gender and the more open we are to thoughts that may differ from our own, the better the world can become. I think that is why it is meaningful to take courses where controversial topics are discussed because that is where the best learning stems from.

Original Inquiry: My main interests harbor in electricity and energy, and with the world’s increasing reliance on technology, the threat of solar flares is a worldwide conundrum. I would like to research ways that we can make our power grid less susceptible to failure in the case that a strong solar flare does hit.

Academic Enrichment:  Along with the research, I would like to do with respect to the power grid, I would like to challenge myself by understanding the electrical wiring of houses and cars. One opportunity that sticks out to me is the Buckeye Electric Motorcycle Race Team.

Leadership Development: My goal would be to become a leader on both the research team in my search for better ways to protect against solar flares and a leader on the Buckeye Electric Motorcycle Race Team. Also, I currently enjoy leading a physics study group and organizing our sessions and planning what we study on a weekly basis.

Service Engagement: As I become more adept with electricity, electronics, and power in general, I would like to give back to the community by setting up home electronics for those unable to do it themselves and figure out power configuration issues within homes for those who cannot afford an expert.
