One of the easiest ways to help be sustainable when cooking starts at the grocery store! There are so many ways to make your grocery shopping more sustainable and every little change makes a difference. You don’t have to feel bad if you can’t implement all these – if you make just one change it really makes a difference.
Here are some simple tips:
- Bring reusable bags when yougo grocery shopping.
- Don’t bag vegetables in disposable plastic bags- consider bringing your own reusable bags or just put them in the cart and wash when you get home.
- Check your cabinets and fridge before you go to the store so you don’t buy things you don’t need
- Shop at Farmer’s Markets-check out Bexley, Clintonville, and Grandview Farmer’s Markets.
- Shop in bulk- Lucky’s Market has a lot of dry goods you can purchase in bulk.
- Sign up for Best Food Forward – check out our blog post about this sustainable food student organization.
- Bring cloth bags for produce and other unpackaged goods.
- Buy fruits and vegetables that are in season.
- Most foods can be frozen- make sure to freeze food so you don’t waste it.
- When buying meat or cheese from the butcher/cheesemonger bring your own tub and ask them to weigh it before putting it in the tub.
