BIKE TOUR – SHAWNEE PARK TO ANTIOCH FARM, ANTIOCH COLLEGE – CLOSED
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2023 – 10:00 – 4:30 – “All Day Bike Tour”
This bike tour includes a 8.4 mile bike ride from Xenia Shawnee Park to Yellow Springs where participants will first stop at Antioch Farm for a tour and Farm to table lunch. Participants can then spend some time touring downtown Yellow Springs before making their return bike trip to Xenia Shawnee Park.
Greene County prides itself as the central hub of four regional bike trails of 62 miles of paved trails within its jurisdiction, developed on former railroad right-of-ways. We will offer a guided 8.4 mile bike ride, one way, that promises to give the participants a once in a lifetime experience of riding on a portion of the Little Miami Scenic Trail from Shawnee Park to Yellow Springs. Opened in 1997 and now running 78 miles from Springfield southwest to the outskirts of Cincinnati, the paved Little Miami Scenic Trail is now one of the most recognizable and well-integrated rail-trails in the country. The bike leader will provide historical information along the route.
In Yellow Springs, you will get to tour The Antioch Farm and partake in a farm to table lunch. Antioch Farm is a working farm and learning laboratory. Started in 2011, the Farm includes a two-acre annual growing area with a 600-square foot hoop house, more than five acres of pasture, two acres of food forest, and a composting site. The Antioch Farm utilizes ecological agriculture to provide an integrated context for liberal arts learning. The farm allows students to experience, explore, and develop methods of sustainability, through its interwoven functions as an outdoor laboratory for curricular study and a living forum where student labor connects to campus dining and recycling. The sustainable land management program has received international recognition, ranking 2nd in the AASHE Campus Sustainability Index.
After the tour of Antioch Farm, participants can walk around downtown Yellow Springs, which is considered a destination place in Ohio.
