MCDB Faculty Dr. James (Jim) Hopper passed away at 74

MCDB family is deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. James (Jim) Hopper, and our sympathies go to his family, in particular to his wife, Dr. Anita. He moved to The Ohio State University in 2006, and he joined our program serving as a teacher for the DNA transactions and gene regulation class. All the students currently enrolled in our program, as well as many alumni learned a lot about science from him. But Dr. Hopper was not only a man of science: he used to stop with students after class or around the campus to talk about everything, with his genuine and smart approach to the life in every aspect. We will miss you, Dr. Hopper.

MCDB GSO executive members invite all the students to join us to a campus memorial in the Grand Lounge of the Faculty Club on Friday, February 3, from noon to 2pm.

Here Dr. Hopper’s obituary.

Congratulations Kelly Crowe for being the 2017 Seilhamer Fellowship recipient!

4th year student Kelly Crowe is the 2017 Seilhamer Fellowship recipient. The Jeffrey J. Seilhamer Cancer Foundation has provided the MCDB program with this fellowship.  Dr. Seilhamer was one of the first graduates of MCDB in 1979.  After his untimely passing in 2003, the Foundation established the fellowship in his name. The award will also recognize outstanding student achievement, and honor the memory of one of our program’s first and most successful graduates, covering the salary and the tuition and fees for one year. Congratulations!

Ray Travel Award – Funding Period #2

The Edward J. Ray Travel Award for Scholarship and Service (Ray Award) encourages and enables graduate students across the university to participate in professional conferences, both in their respective fields and in the broader academic community, by reimbursing or partially reimbursing the expenses incurred by graduate students during travel to conferences and meetings to present original research.

Unlike other programs that grant travel funds, the Ray Award gives substantial weight to the applicant’s service to his/her department, the university, and the surrounding community. Ray Award judges also take into account the academic standing of the applicant, the applicant’s professional goals, the nature of the conference being attended, and the applicant’s ability to convey the focus of their research to a general audience.
