Professional Development Program

Through the Math Science Partnership (MSP) grant, The Ohio State University is offering a free, comprehensive professional development program for eligible high school science teachers. The program enables a teacher to become proficient enough in the field of materials science to offer an elective course at their high school.  Materials Science naturally integrates all of the elements of STEM content areas.  This program was developed by faculty at The Ohio State University’s College of Engineering, Department of Materials Science Engineering, and has been in operation since 2012.

This professional development program provides sustained support throughout the academic year following attendance at an ASM Teacher camp during the summer of 2017. Teachers develop a greater understanding of implementation of modules covered in the professional development sessions as well as support for any questions related to the ASM laboratory manual received at camp.  Additional experience as well as classroom management and curriculum design support help teachers either incorporate materials science in your existing courses or run a stand-alone course.

Preference is given to chemistry and materials science teachers from high-needs districts that are committed to ultimately implementing/delivering a materials science elective course at their school.

Program Elements: This is a no-cost, holistic year-long program that will instruct on materials science content, science fundamentals and tactics for teaching in an engaging and hands-on manner.  The program is currently in the process of renewal.  The funding decision will be announced late summer and the chart below describes the elements of the program based on the outcome.
