Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

I have the pleasure to be apart of the Honors Program at the Ohio State University which comes with certain requirements to ensure we are being substantial students and citizens of the word. The main categories the program wishes we focus on are Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. In order to accomplish our G.O.A.L.S. we have to have a plan to grow as an individual in those areas. By being a daughter of immigrants I have developed a deep appreciation for diversity. For this reason global awareness to me means educating yourself on different cultures, having an eagerness to get involved in cross cultural experiences, and understanding other countries’ beliefs. I am taking HISTORY 3269: Eastern Europe in the 20th Century, where I will about European History. Also, I hope to travel abroad during my time at OSU to gain first hand experience in a different culture. I have a deep embedded interest in biology and hope to do research in the field. It is important I gain undergraduate research experience since it is a possible career I would like to go into. Original Inquiry through research  is crucial to my time at OSU because they offer endless opportunities to get involved in research. I am thinking of attending Spring Undergraduate Research Festival and 3 Minute Thesis Competition to get exposed to undergraduate research on campus. Academics have always been focus point in my life. By being a biology major there are classes I am required to take. However, there are some room in which classes I choose to extend my academic pursuits. For example, I might add a microbiology minor or art minor. Either minors would make me happy but microbiology might would be more useful with my major. For GE courses, I’ve chosen classes that will help me become a well rounded students ranging from art to 3000 level history classes. By having a wide range of classes it will make me prepared for the future. Leadership is crucial in a world were opinions and ideas spread rapidly. Luckily, OSU provides their students with resources to become leader and how to use leadership to be benefit the community. For me, I will try to get a leadership position (junior/senior year) in the club I am currently in. In addition, I hope to become mentor for refugees through a student organization next year since I missed the deadline to apply this year. Another less obvious way is by being a leader would be by being a positive resource for my peers which is more of a personal quite leader which I would describe myself as. I think it is in our nature to help other people and service engagement is something we all can do. Right away I got involved with a service student organization called Service Engagement Program. Currently, we are trying to set up a health fair to help educate and provide resources for student. In addition, we have to do volunteer hours each semester so that will encourage me to get involved in the community. I hope I am able to accomplish all my G.O.A.L.S. during my time at OSU.
