Emerging Advocates

Self-advocacy is an important tool for independence, but it does not come naturally. Youth with disabilities become, or emerge into, successful self-advocates when they receive quality self-advocacy skills training, have many chances to practice self-advocacy skills, and receive support from important people in their lives.

As a recipient of the Emerging Advocate grant from the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council, the Nisonger Center hopes to provide the skills training, practice and support to caregivers, teachers and other professionals in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This blog is just one of the many ways we hope to do so.

Not only will you hear from project staff, but you will also hear from self-advocates themselves on topics on anything from back to school anxiety and transitions to college prep and dating and relationships.

Stay tuned for more!
