About Me: My name is Kristi Thomas. I am a Registered Nurse with four and half years of experience. I originally obtained my Bachelors in Zoology from the Ohio State University in 2010 and worked in pediatric cancer research, specializing in Spinal Muscular Atrophy, with Nationwide Children’s Hospital. I enjoyed my job but funding was an issue which got me thinking and pushed me to pursue a career in nursing. I have had many family members in the medical field, I just never knew if it was the right field for me. Therefore, I got a job at Nationwide Children’s Hospital as a Patient Care Assistant on a general medicine unit and went back to school to get my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. I graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain College of Nursing in 2015. I worked in the Progressive Care Unit float pool at the Ohio State University for two years after graduation before pursuing a career as a school nurse.

I was experiencing some nursing burnout and decided to pursue my desire to work with adolescents outside of the hospital setting. After having kids, I decided I wanted to pursue school nursing for better work hours and more time with the family. I began working as a full- school nurse with Columbus City Schools in 2018. I am placed part time in two elementary schools, each Pre-K-5^th grade with over 350 students in each building. Working in the school system aligns more with my values of life and my desire to assist adolescents.

I am currently in my last semester at the Ohio State University completing the School Nurse Professional Pupil Certificate. I will graduate in April 2020 and can apply for my ODE Professional Licensure. School nursing has provided me with a new passion for my nursing career and has given me a new sense of personal satisfaction and enrichment.
