Scholars Reflection

Describe your first impressions of Ohio State. Consider the following questions to help write the reflection: What did you think of welcome week? Are your classes similar to what you expected or different? How are you adjusting to your life and new schedule away from home? Compare your expectations prior to what you actually experienced in your first weeks on campus.

I have wanted to come to The Ohio State University ever since my older sister, Anne Marie, came here in 2010. Up until last year, when I began applying for college, I had a different idea of Ohio State and college in general. I had always thought of it as a place where you went to hang out with your friends for the year and eat free food. After I began the application process, I began to think of college a bit more realistically. I started thinking about the little things that would be different in college. My friends, family and teachers began giving me advice and warnings constantly. Each day I became more and more intimidated. I was mostly intimidated by the intense work load I was warned about and the high cost of tuition and living on my own. Then, this summer, I kind of got sick of being intimidated and decided to just accept the challenges that were headed my way.

I have been here at Ohio State for about 2 weeks, and college is surprisingly almost exactly as I imagined it this summer. My favorite things to do, as I expected, are to go eat at one of the many dining options here as well as go play sports with my friends. I really enjoy my classes and my professors so far, but I expect the work load to pick up a lot.

I was surprised by a couple of things. The first couple of days were packed with activities and things to do because of welcome week. However, after the first couple of days, I found myself bored and looking for things to do. I had always viewed college as a stream of never ending activities. I have since started working and joined the club soccer team here so my schedule is a lot more busy. I was also surprised because I found that campus feels a lot smaller than I expected. Everyone warned me how big Ohio State is, but I do not think that I have gone anywhere on campus without seeing someone that I know.
