Journal #3

My first semester at Ohio State went really fast. It was definitely a good decision to be apart of the architecture scholars program here. It was helpful to know the people in my classes so that we could study together and ask each other questions. I have also made many of my friends through the program! I also joined the club soccer team here which has been the best decision I have ever made. It was so great to continue playing soccer as well as be apart of the team. Going forward, I will definitely continue playing on this team. I will also continue to be apart of the scholars program. I wasn’t able to participate in the events as much as I would have liked because of soccer, but hopefully I will be able participate more next semester and next year.

I have really enjoyed learning about architecture this semester. I think the major suits me well. I have missed taking certain classes from high school that I will hopefully be able to explore more. I have specifically missed taking Spanish and math. I would possibly like to minor in Spanish. I would also like to possibly minor in mathematics but I’m not sure how possibly that would be with architecture. I have also looked into Digital Communications as a major, but it is very competitive and difficult to switch into. Also, I think that after college if I wanted to work with digital communications I potentially could with a degree in architecture.

There are many things I would like to do to gain experience. I would love to get an internship this summer, but I’m not sure how possible this is as a freshman. I will do some research and go to the spring career fair to look into interning more. I would also like to join AIAS as well as find maybe one more organization to be apart of. I also want to become apart of STEP and look into studying abroad or possibly something like the US national parks experience we were told about.

These goals relate to the Honors and Scholars GOALS. Studying abroad will enhance my global awareness. My classes as well as my job at the MMC scholars office are helping my academic enrichment. I would like to get more involved with my soccer team and take on a leadership role develop my leadership. To become more engaged in service, I plan to take on responsibilities for a large service project I participate in at home during the summer. I am not sure exactly how to get involved with research for the original inquiry part of the GOALS. I am not sure what this would include for architecture. I will look into this as well next semester.

Scholars To Do List Part 2

The last three coffee shops I went to for this to-do list are Kafe Kerouac, Cafe Brioso, and Fox in the Snow Cafe. The first of these three coffee shops I went to is Kafe Kerouac. I went here with my friend Olivia on a cold and rainy night a few weeks ago. We walked there because we found that it was only about half a mile from our dorm! The walk was cold but definitely worth it because I ended up really liking this little cafe! It is a really tiny and somewhat run down coffee shop with limited seating. While this does not sound very appealing, I really liked it! The limited seating created a social environment because you are forced to sit at the same table as people you might not know. I also really liked that there seemed to be a lot of regular customers there who knew the staff personally. The cafe was also connected to a restaurant next door that had live music playing! Me and Olivia had originally planned to study for some upcoming midterms at Kafe Kerouac, and while we both really enjoyed the environment, it was not very study-friendly. We ended up just getting smoothies and hanging out there for a bit before we left to study elsewhere. Cafe Kerouac was probably my favorite coffee shop from this to-do list. It helps that it is within walking distance of my dorm. I do think that I’ll go back to maybe do some homework that does not require a lot of focus.

Kafe Kerouac

The next two coffee shops I went to I did not like as much as Cafe Kerouac. I went to Cafe Brioso on a Monday morning after my Explore Columbus class. The line was really long and took about twenty minutes to get through – probably because it was a Monday around lunchtime. They did have a lot of food options that looked good but I just got a coffee because I was in a hurry. They also had a large variety of important coffee beans that was really cool. They had coffee beans from Guatemala, Costa Rica, and about 10 other places. I probably won’t go back to Cafe Brioso because its kind of far away from my dorm and it was kind of expensive. I also went to Fox in the Snow Cafe on my way back from my explore Columbus class. I liked the openness of this cafe and the coffee I got was good. However, it is also somewhat far away and expensive so I’m not sure I will go back.

I really enjoyed completed the Columbus to-do list! I have always liked trying new restaurants and coffee shops so it was really fun for me. It also helped me to understand the layout of Columbus as I had to navigate it by myself at times. I also learned the bus system a little bit better. The list also helped me find a lot of stores in the short north that I would like to visit again! To someone completing the same to-do list as me, I would definitely suggest Kafe Kerouac as it is close to campus and it was really cute!

Scholars To Do List

For my scholars to-do list I chose to do the coffee experiences. I am from Toledo and there is not very much to do there. One of the few things we have are cute coffee shops downtown! I was really excited to move to Columbus because it is a bigger city and has a lot of cute places to go to including a lot of coffee shops! I was very excited to do the coffee experiences for this project because I hadn’t gotten to go to any yet. I was mostly hoping to find a new place to go drink coffee and study at and also get to know the short north a little bit better!

On Saturday, me and THE Olivia Mullen ? went to the short north to go to a couple of coffee shops for the project. The first coffee shop we went to was One Line Coffee. We both got a black coffee and talked to the barista for about twenty minutes about how they make their coffee. We were both very impressed by how much of a process there was for making a single cup of coffee! While this coffee shop was cool I do not think that I’ll go back anytime soon because it was 4$ for a plain cup of coffee and it wasn’t that great.

The second coffee shop we went to was called Mission Coffee. I really liked this coffee shop! I got a vanilla latte and it was really good. The shop itself was also super cute. It was really dark inside but one of the walls was just one large window which lit the room in an interesting way. We were also one of the only customers there so we just talked to the baristas for a while and had a fun conversation. I will definitely go back to Mission!

I really liked doing the first part of this project! On top of going to these two coffee shops, me and Liv also went to a couple of really cool thrift stores and looked around for a little bit. We also walked through the downtown Columbus Halloween bash which was really cool!

Scholars Reflection

Describe your first impressions of Ohio State. Consider the following questions to help write the reflection: What did you think of welcome week? Are your classes similar to what you expected or different? How are you adjusting to your life and new schedule away from home? Compare your expectations prior to what you actually experienced in your first weeks on campus.

I have wanted to come to The Ohio State University ever since my older sister, Anne Marie, came here in 2010. Up until last year, when I began applying for college, I had a different idea of Ohio State and college in general. I had always thought of it as a place where you went to hang out with your friends for the year and eat free food. After I began the application process, I began to think of college a bit more realistically. I started thinking about the little things that would be different in college. My friends, family and teachers began giving me advice and warnings constantly. Each day I became more and more intimidated. I was mostly intimidated by the intense work load I was warned about and the high cost of tuition and living on my own. Then, this summer, I kind of got sick of being intimidated and decided to just accept the challenges that were headed my way.

I have been here at Ohio State for about 2 weeks, and college is surprisingly almost exactly as I imagined it this summer. My favorite things to do, as I expected, are to go eat at one of the many dining options here as well as go play sports with my friends. I really enjoy my classes and my professors so far, but I expect the work load to pick up a lot.

I was surprised by a couple of things. The first couple of days were packed with activities and things to do because of welcome week. However, after the first couple of days, I found myself bored and looking for things to do. I had always viewed college as a stream of never ending activities. I have since started working and joined the club soccer team here so my schedule is a lot more busy. I was also surprised because I found that campus feels a lot smaller than I expected. Everyone warned me how big Ohio State is, but I do not think that I have gone anywhere on campus without seeing someone that I know.
