Year In Review – Sophomore Year

Global Awareness is an area that I hold in high regard as a first-generation American. I have taken classes that broaden my perspective of the world through art and history, and these classes have been great supplements to the information I see in media for modern global awareness. For example, my theatre class has taught me about the theatre of Europe, my Psychology of Emotion class has taught me about the philosophies of European, Chinese, and Islamic thinkers, and my East Asian Art class has taught me about the painting and sculpting of China and Japan. These classes have given me a more deep appreciation for these cultures and have caused me to want to explore them more on my own, whether through travel or more study.

Original Inquiry is an area that I have been very involved with so far at Ohio State, and in my life in general over the past two years. At the university I am involved with undergraduate research in the Fazio Social Cognition and Attitudes lab, where I help conduct experiments, write literature reviews, and eventually will be writing my own senior thesis. My experience in this lab has greatly allowed me to understand the research process and has set me up for future original inquiry as well. Additionally, over the past year I have been producing and distributing my own original music and am planning on continuing to do so for the foreseeable future, which is a very strong example of the creative process.

As an aspiring dual-degree Honors graduate, Academic Enrichment is an area that my curriculum has definitely shaped. I have taken advanced and honors Psychology and Statistics courses, and have received a very well-rounded but high-level body of knowledge from doing so. For example, for my Statistics degree I have taken calculus, data analysis, and mathematic theory classes, and have truly developed my logical reasoning and understanding by doing so. Through my Psychology degree I have taken classes ranging from child development, positivity, interpersonal relationships, emotion, and neuroscience, through which I’ve developed my scientific and abstract thinking. Pairing these who primary focusses with my general education requirements which have developed my language, writing, and artistic points of view, my academic enrichment at the university has been more than robust. As an aspiring graduate student, I believe this high-level coursework will prepare me very well for future education.

I am a resident advisor in Torres House, and this experience has really helped me develop into a leader around campus. My experience as an RA has helped my ability to take multiple perspectives and reflect upon my own experiences, because the residents who I manage are mostly first-year students, and are quite different from me in the academic sense. This role has also allowed me to explore more facets of myself as a key aspect of leadership as an RA is to make connections with the residents, and them being so diverse, being in tune with different aspects of myself that I could potentially share with a resident has been key with my development as a leader. As an aspiring professor this ability to connect with people who are younger and less experienced than you will prove highly beneficial.

Service engagement is an area of the GOALS that I think I am currently lacking in. I am currently a peer mentor in the Honors Arts and Sciences peer mentor program, which is a type of service engagement since I am helping the freshmen in the program in a socially beneficial way, but I think I can do more for service. I am potentially planning on joining Dr. Cheavens’ committee on student mental health and awareness since I am quite passionate about mental health awareness and am a Psychology major, and this is a great example of service engagement. Not only would this opportunity be socially beneficial for the Ohio State community, but also would contribute greatly to my development as a caring and helpful person.

G.O.A.L.S. Statement

Global Awareness – Join one more culture-oriented organization by the end of my first year to enhance my global awareness while also strengthening my own cultural pride. Some organizations I have been thinking about include the Muslim Student Association and the Urdu Club.

Original Inquiry – Find a research position in the department of Psychology here at Ohio State for the Summer between my first and second year that I can continue to work in throughout my undergraduate career.

Academic Enrichment – Maintain a cumulative grade point average above a 3.8 throughout my first year and ultimately graduate in four years with that same high grade point average with two degrees in Psychology and Statistics.

Leadership Development – Apply and be accepted into the Ohio Union Activities Board for my second year and remain in the organization throughout my undergraduate career.

Service Engagement – Volunteer some of my free time to helping those less fortunate that I am, specifically underprivileged children who I could assist in teaching or any other possible manners.
