Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.

Global awareness involves developing understanding and empathy for individuals both within one’s own culture and region as well as those outside them. To improve my global awareness, I want to continue to attend Q*mmunity Dialogues–a group focused on discussion of the issues faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in today’s society–and possibly volunteer as a mentor for LGBT students at the Multicultural Center next semester or year. I intend to take courses on Native American and LGBT history next semester or year, and additionally want to look into potential study abroad programs for my following years at Ohio State.

Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.

Original inquiry relates to the participation in experiences that develop creative inquiry, whether that is research, career exploration, or the fine arts. I intend to continue performing with the Buckeye Philharmonic orchestra for the rest of the year, as this is an organization that has introduced me to many new kinds of orchestral music and is something I enjoy. I additionally intend to look into other music organizations, as well as organizations related to neuroscience and speech and hearing science, to narrow down the major that is best for me.

Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.

Academic enrichment is involved in using the resources of the university to learn as much as one can. To fulfill this goal, I intend to attend workshops for the pre-PT/OT organization to learn about this career and the nuances it entails. I additionally intend to take honors economics next semester (if not at that time, then later in my undergraduate career) to have a better understanding of finance and how businesses function.

Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

Leadership development involves learning to fully participate in many facets of one’s involvements, both through classroom discussions and participation in different clubs and experiences. To work toward this goal, I intend to continue participating in classroom discussions when applicable, and to help organize the website for Mind’s Matter(a club created this year that raises awareness for the connections between neuroscience and mental health).

Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.

I intend to join the student organization Students for Refugees in order to support the refugees and immigrant communities within Columbus. As I am interested in education, I could help with tutoring in this organization as well as tutoring in Project Impact.
