Volunteer of the Year

service-photoI want to pursue a future career in medicine and therefore have tried to gain as much medical experience as I can to make sure that it is right for me. In doing so, I have shadowed and volunteered at multiple health centers. My local hospital was my favorite place to volunteer. As a student in high school, I volunteered at, and got involved with this hospital. I had the most student volunteer hours and won a scholarship through a program called UH-Tech. The leaders of this program have asked me to return this year to give a speech to the students currently in it. I love my community and I really feel connected to people involved with the hospital. Union hospital is growing and just received a new cutting-edge emergency department. I was happy that I was volunteering during the time of its opening. All this volunteering and involvement helped me to understand that a medical career was a good fit for me.

Heart Walk

I attended the American Heart Association’s Heat Walk as a scholars event. The event had an incredible turnout. It felt good to help raise money for heart disease research and awareness. This was really important to me because heart disease is one of the leading causes of death for men and women in the world. I thought it was incredible that so many people showed up to walk the walk and express their support of the American Heart Association. I gained an understanding of the magnitude of caring and supportive people there are from this experience. Before this, I would have never imagined that so many people would go to an event like this. This newfound understanding was confirmed when I attended another event similar to this. This event, Steps for Sarcoma, also had a great turn out and everyone involved were very kind and giving people. Knowing that there are such nice people in the world is really comforting.

Abstract

Hi! I am Brent Keating and this is my e portfolio. This e-portfolio contains/will contain my academic achievements and involvements. This site will act as a timeline outlining my experiences and achievements as a college student. This will hopefully be found useful for letters of recommendations, as well as act as a space to save and organize what I have achieved over the years. This will be useful for scholarships, interviews, and applications. The “about me” section gives a summary of me as a person, while the artifacts paint a picture of what I have done academically. The “year in review” section acts as a time line organizer. The GOALS section will relate what I have done and what I plan on doing, with the ideals of the scholar program.  The last part of this site, the “career” section, will express how my skills and experiences will help me be prepared for my future career.

Brent Keating

I identify as a typical Ohio State student. I come from Dover Ohio, a city about thirty minutes from Canton Ohio. My experiences prior to coming to Ohio State certainly shaped me into the person I am today. One of the major influences on me as a person is my family. I grew up surrounded by a close family who supported me and helped me become who I am. Both of my parents are in the medical field and this really impacted my career aspirations. While they encouraged me to pursue any career option that appealed to me; I found out that a career in the medical field would most likely be the best for me. I came to this conclusion by shadowing doctors and volunteering at my local hospital. My decision to pursue a medical career is one of the reasons I joined the Biological Sciences Scholars Program. I wanted to be in an environment that was focused and had similar goals as me. My major is Biochemistry and the great majority of students in this scholars program also have science majors. The most apparent qualities and or traits I see being exemplified on campus are academic greatness and diversity. The students and faculty are much more academically focused than I expected. The diversity of this campus is also much greater than expected. I believe that both of these are important aspects, and they really seem to be exemplified on campus.
