‘Ike Kapoho Project- Archaeology Workday Opportunity

Archaeology Workday Opportunity: Research and Restoration of Kapoho Fishpond, Waiheʻe Maui.

June 1 and 15th, 2024

  • Please join the Hawaiʻi Land Trust at the Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge for two community workdays dedicated to archaeological research and restoration of Kapoho, a Loko Iʻa Kalo.

  • Participants should arrive at 9 am and plan on 3 hours of work that will include training in recording archaeological features and excavation. Please wear appropriate clothing for sun, durable shoes and gloves. Please bring water; a meal will be provided.
  • Sign language interpretation will be available for the deaf and hard of hearing community.
  • Access to site: Use Google Maps to direct you to Waihee Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge.
  • From Airport, take Hwy 36 to Kahului/Wailuku.
  • Turn right on HI-3400 to Waiehu
  • Turn right on HI 340 to Waiehu
  • Turn right onto Halewaiu Rd. There will be a basketball court on the right corner. There is also a blue sign that indicates to turn right to reach Waihe’e Golf Course
  • When you see the Waihe’e Golf Course sign, turn LEFT before the sign to go down the rutted dirt road. You will pass an open gate on the left that is painted yellow
  • Go down the dirt road, then up the hill. When you reach the large parking lot with the view of the beach, turn left through the yellow cattle gate.
  • Follow the road straight for ¼ mile.  Park in front of the house at the end of the road on the left that has fishing floats and netting on its fence.
  •  Meeting will be by the ahu.
