Anthropology

Can I just say how proud I am of this piece of foam with the Department of Anthropology stamped across its forehead! ‘Cause I am immensely proud of it! To many  people it might not seem like much or even a piece of junk to throw away, but to me it means something more. I got this silly swag when I changed my major from Biology to Anthropological Sciences during my second semester. This was something that I was debating for a long time since I found out that studying Biology was’t making me happy but the anthropology course that I was taking did. So I decided to make the switch and I couldn’t be happier. This was a major that I chose for myself and not to make my grandparents or the rest of my family happy with “acceptable” majors but, it ended up being okay anyway.

BuckeyeThon

Something really amazing that Ohio State does every year is BuckeyeThon. This 24 hr Dance Marathon is prepped all year to get ready for this one event in February. BuckeyeThon is working towards helping Children and families at Nationwide Children’s Hospital dealing primarily in Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplants. This event is split into two parts and the Kids and their Families get to join in on the fun! There are events throughout the year like CarnOval and the Fashion show as well. I’m glad that I got to be a part of a great community and be part of a great team! I joined through Health Points and was on Team Yellow with Avalon. After meeting with some of the Kids and Families, I’m glad that I was able to participate and cannot wait until next year!

Q & A 2018-2019

My Goals –

My goals for this year are academically to figure out what major I wish to take as well as how to study. I wish to be able to find one or two new clubs to participate in and to get more involved on campus.

My E-portfolio-

Is going to be more of a reflective type of e-portfolio. I think that it would be great to have a place to be able to look back onto my years in college and have something to talk about and remember wen I need to.

Why am I Here? –

I’m here at college because I want to learn and grow as a person. I also want to be able to get a career that will help me continue to learn as well as help out my community.

Extra Curricular? –

I’m part of Bio-Sci scholars even with a uncommon major, Comic and Graphic Novel club, and Science & Humanities Club. I chose these clubs because I like to have both perspectives in life and since I have a Humanities degree, I thought that it would be a good idea to be a Bio-Sci scholar since I plan on staying Pre-med. The S & H club is essentially the same reasoning but I will be helping in promoting this to campus. The C & GN Club is just for fun because it’s interesting.

Major Influences/ Academic interests-

I really enjoy all parts of Anthropology especially the cultural and biological parts.  I really like to see how we react to our culture and to the world around us from past to present, that and math is my least favorite subject.

Future Career Interests –

To either continue on my Pre-Med path and go into medical school to become a doctor, or to go onto graduate school to pursue Anthropology and see where that goes.

Work Experiences-

During High School I have worked for 3 summers as a summer cleaner/ painter at my local elementary school and a year and a half as a store clerk in a local family owned Apple Orchard.

In college I am currently working as an Office Assistant in one of the dorms on campus during the school year and plan on going back next year.

How Will I Change the World? –

Good question! At the moment…..I don’t know? I think I can start by small gestures of kindness and hope it expands from there for now. Who knows, maybe I’ll get hit with an idea someday!

How Do I / Can I Help My Community? –

Normally I help my community during work in the summers as cleaning the schools and being part of a few clubs/ classes that did community service (perks of a small hometown).

For now, Bio-Sci helps us find volunteer opportunities and I’ll find some on my own to go to through Columbus gives back which is a great organization. https://columbusgivesback.org/events/

Of course there are things to do on campus such as BuckeyeThon, which was absolutely amazing and fun to volunteer at!
