Q&A 2019-2020

My Goals –

My goals for this year are academically get stronger and boost my GPA. I wish to be able to find one or two new clubs to participate in and to get more involved on campus.

My E-portfolio-

Is going to be more of a work portfolio as it is going to be mostly a work in progress and one that will help me build my aspirations for continuing with my goals.

Why am I Here? –

I’m here at college because I want to learn and grow as a person. I also want to be able to get a career that will help me continue to learn as well as help out my community.

Extra Curricular? –

I’m part of Bio-Sci scholars even with a uncommon major, Anthropology Public Outreach Program and Science & Humanities Club. I chose this club because I like to have both perspectives in life and since I have a Humanities degree, I thought that it would be a good idea to be a Bio-Sci scholar. APOP is a great way to introduce Anthropology to more people and so that it is a fun and diverse field. The S & H club is essentially the same reasoning but I will be helping in promoting this to campus.

Major Influences/ Academic interests-

I really enjoy all parts of Anthropology especially the cultural and biological parts.  I really like to see how we react to our culture and to the world around us from past to present, that and math is my least favorite subject.

Future Career Interests –

To  go onto graduate school to pursue Anthropology and either work in the academic field or to work in the Museum field

Work Experiences-

During High School I have worked for 3 summers as a summer cleaner/ painter at my local elementary school and a year and a half as a store clerk in a local family owned Apple Orchard.

In college I was an Office Assistant in one of the dorms on campus during the school year for two years.

How Will I Change the World? –

Good question! At the moment…..I don’t know? I think I can start by small gestures of kindness and hope it expands from there for now. Who knows, maybe I’ll get hit with an idea someday!

How Do I / Can I Help My Community? –

I work with APOP to bring awareness of education and anthropology to both students, teachers and adults. Bio-Sci helps us find volunteer opportunities and I’ll find some on my own to go to through Columbus gives back which is a great organization. https://columbusgivesback.org/events/

STEP trip

As much as I love exploring off campus, this was really a treat. My STEP advisor had been able to get us a tour of the local Greek Orthodox Church. This was a splendid piece of architecture that had the entire main room designed and decorated in glass. It is absolutely gorgeous and you could feel how proud and in love with the cathedral the people were.

It was a great trip as it is not something that I would have thought about doing myself. I didn’t grow up going to church myself and it was interesting to get a history lesson of the cathedral as well as the biblical stories behind the glass. For example this dome is as wide as the cross over which it sits and centered where the arms meet. Depicted is Christ the Pantocrator and surrounding him is the 24 Old Testament Patriarchs that feature into the genealogy of Christ.

It was really neat to be able to take a anthropological perspective into something that was right down the street from me. This was such a fantastic trip and I realize how privileged I am to be able to see something like this.

Skull Cart

As an Anthropology student I have to learn about the three different disciplines of Anthropology: Cultural, Physical, and Archaeological. With APOP I have a chance to teach others about anthropology and get them interested in what we do. One of my favorite volunteer outings is to work the cart at COSI. WE work a few saturdays for kids and their parents and also on Cosi in the Dark for adults.

For this we play a game with the skulls encouraging people to put them in order from earliest hominid to present. Then we place them in order and answer any questions posed to us. This is my favorite part because there’s always so many unique questions and the kids are really fun to work with. I love these skull casts because they are such a fun prop to work with and its really entertaining to talk about them. I also get the bonus of learning new facts about these casts and the hominids that they represent. The older students are also a great resource of information.

It’s a great way for me to volunteer as I quite enjoy working with Cosi and their staff. I get to work with fellow students and gain more connections within the Anthropology department.

End of Year 2

This year was a journey!

I ended up quitting my job towards the end of the year, I gained more friends and more confidence. My dad and I went on a European trip that was just amazing. With the amount of cultural sites we visited I just knew Anthropology was for me.

I added an International Relations major to my Anthropology one and started the headache inducing journey of figuring out what I would like to do in my future. I have such a long list of jobs and internships that look so interesting.

I’m proud of my more personal journey as I have made more friends, connected more with family and really took care of my health and wellness.

The one thing that I am upset about for this was the fact that I did not complete the STEP program. However with COVID and my courses, it would not have worked out well for the internship that I had planned. Although, My STEP leader Prof. Jusdanis was such a great person and he was really fantastic to work with.

It was a good year despite COVID cancelling halfway through but now I know what to do for the coming semesters.

End of the Year Reflection- First Year

It’s the end! Well not really, but it’s almost here. There was a lot to process throughout my first year of Undergrad.

There were a lot of bright points as I had a great job, I made friends, I got to  experience new things and meet new people. I got to learn more about the Columbus Community and everything around campus. I was always an OSU football fan so Game Days were awesome! A goal for next year is to be in Block O with the other students.

Learning to study was hard and it was a big transition from high school to college. I did take a big step in making sure my academics were heading in the direction that I wanted it to which is why I chose to change to Anthropology with a minor in Music.

I also to a large step in learning more about wellness in both physical and mental. I think that being in college is a great way to transform oneself both academically and personally.

It will be a challenge but one that I am up for!

Anthropology

Can I just say how proud I am of this piece of foam with the Department of Anthropology stamped across its forehead! ‘Cause I am immensely proud of it! To many  people it might not seem like much or even a piece of junk to throw away, but to me it means something more. I got this silly swag when I changed my major from Biology to Anthropological Sciences during my second semester. This was something that I was debating for a long time since I found out that studying Biology was’t making me happy but the anthropology course that I was taking did. So I decided to make the switch and I couldn’t be happier. This was a major that I chose for myself and not to make my grandparents or the rest of my family happy with “acceptable” majors but, it ended up being okay anyway.

BuckeyeThon

Something really amazing that Ohio State does every year is BuckeyeThon. This 24 hr Dance Marathon is prepped all year to get ready for this one event in February. BuckeyeThon is working towards helping Children and families at Nationwide Children’s Hospital dealing primarily in Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplants. This event is split into two parts and the Kids and their Families get to join in on the fun! There are events throughout the year like CarnOval and the Fashion show as well. I’m glad that I got to be a part of a great community and be part of a great team! I joined through Health Points and was on Team Yellow with Avalon. After meeting with some of the Kids and Families, I’m glad that I was able to participate and cannot wait until next year!

Q & A 2018-2019

My Goals –

My goals for this year are academically to figure out what major I wish to take as well as how to study. I wish to be able to find one or two new clubs to participate in and to get more involved on campus.

My E-portfolio-

Is going to be more of a reflective type of e-portfolio. I think that it would be great to have a place to be able to look back onto my years in college and have something to talk about and remember wen I need to.

Why am I Here? –

I’m here at college because I want to learn and grow as a person. I also want to be able to get a career that will help me continue to learn as well as help out my community.

Extra Curricular? –

I’m part of Bio-Sci scholars even with a uncommon major, Comic and Graphic Novel club, and Science & Humanities Club. I chose these clubs because I like to have both perspectives in life and since I have a Humanities degree, I thought that it would be a good idea to be a Bio-Sci scholar since I plan on staying Pre-med. The S & H club is essentially the same reasoning but I will be helping in promoting this to campus. The C & GN Club is just for fun because it’s interesting.

Major Influences/ Academic interests-

I really enjoy all parts of Anthropology especially the cultural and biological parts.  I really like to see how we react to our culture and to the world around us from past to present, that and math is my least favorite subject.

Future Career Interests –

To either continue on my Pre-Med path and go into medical school to become a doctor, or to go onto graduate school to pursue Anthropology and see where that goes.

Work Experiences-

During High School I have worked for 3 summers as a summer cleaner/ painter at my local elementary school and a year and a half as a store clerk in a local family owned Apple Orchard.

In college I am currently working as an Office Assistant in one of the dorms on campus during the school year and plan on going back next year.

How Will I Change the World? –

Good question! At the moment…..I don’t know? I think I can start by small gestures of kindness and hope it expands from there for now. Who knows, maybe I’ll get hit with an idea someday!

How Do I / Can I Help My Community? –

Normally I help my community during work in the summers as cleaning the schools and being part of a few clubs/ classes that did community service (perks of a small hometown).

For now, Bio-Sci helps us find volunteer opportunities and I’ll find some on my own to go to through Columbus gives back which is a great organization. https://columbusgivesback.org/events/

Of course there are things to do on campus such as BuckeyeThon, which was absolutely amazing and fun to volunteer at!
