Week 12 Update

The following information was sent out in an email on 11/7/16, and has been added to the events calendar. Please remember to register for BuckeyeThon! If you participate in Buckeyethon you will receive 4 points for spring semester.  You can register at Buckeyethon.osu.edu and make sure to search for “International Affairs Scholars Scholars” and join our team! Additionally, we will have a 2nd year meeting this Wednesday, 6-7:30 in Hagerty 180. We will spend time in our small groups reflecting on our projects thus far and will have a current events discussion as well, so please come prepared.


Election Night Watch Party at Woody’s (2 points)
Tuesday, November 8, 6:30pm-12:00am, Woody’s Tavern in the Ohio Union

Ready for election campaigns to end? Wondering who our next President will be? Join us Tuesday night in Woody’s Tavern at the Union to watch the election returns come in, hear from election law experts, and celebrate the work-in-progress that is our democracy! Presented by PSL Scholars and the John Glenn Civic Leadership Council.

Terrorism Series Part 2: A Case Study on ISIS (2 points, 1 additional if you attended both events)

BRob VandenBerg, former Air Force intelligence officer, current officer in the Air National Guard, and sociology graduate student, will be providing a presentation on the formation of ISIS and how it operates today with a Q&A session at the end.

Come join your fellow IA Scholars and floor mates from 8 & 9 on a trip to North Market on Saturday, November 12th.  Established in 1876, the North Market is Columbus’ only remaining true public market. Columbus Zoo Wildlights (2 points)
Friday, November 18, meet at 4:00 pm in Smith-Steeb lobby
Come see the Columbus Zoo Wildlights with the other Arts and Sciences Scholars Programs on Friday, November 18.  Admission to the zoo is free if you bring along 5 canned food items to donate to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.  Meet at 4:00pm in the Smith-Steeb lobby to ride a CABS bus to the zoo. Mother Russia Trivia Night
Thursday, November 17, 7:00pm, Smith side basement
Did you learn the most about Russia from Red on “Orange is the New Black” or Svetlana on “Shameless”? Time to check your knowledge! Come to “Mother Russia Trivia Night” and participate in a group trivia. Fun learning about all sorts of things about Russia is provided! You can come alone or already with a team (3-4 people). Winning team is getting Russia-related prizes (no, it’s not a bear).

Assistant Hall Director Pasha Sergeev (yes, he is from Russia) is hosting the program.

IA Friendsgiving Potluck (1 point)
Sunday, November 13, 6:00-8:00pm, Steeb Side basement 
Come celebrate one of the best holidays around with your fellow IAs at the 1st Annual IA Friendsgiving Potluck! We will provide the turkey, mashed potatoes and a veggie pasta option and we ask you to provide the sides.  We recommend bringing one of your family’s favorite dishes, so that you can share your traditions with your friends.  Just a reminder, there are kitchens in the Steeb-side basement and Smith-side 1st floor that you can use if you want to bake something for the potluck! Email Doug (urbancsik.1@osu.edu) if you have any questions and RSVP here with what dish you would like to bring

The K-Pop Wave and the Korean Language (2 points)

The Institute for Korean Studies will present a lecture by Professor Jung Sup Kim (Korean Language and Literature, Dean of the Institute of International Education, Kyunghee University). Kim will discuss the history of the K-pop wave over the past two decades and its influence and implications for the Korean language. OUAB Event: Breaking the Silence with Edward Snowden (2 points)

Wednesday, November 30, 7:30 pm, Ohio Union Performance Hall
Snowden is a former National Security Agency contractor who leaked classified documents from the NSA in 2013 which revealed details surrounding a domestic surveillance program. As a result, he is facing three felony charges. He will be live-streaming to Ohio State’s campus on Nov. 30 from Russia, where he has been granted asylum. This event is sold out however, we secured a number of tickets for IA and so look for more information as to how you can get one of those tickets closer to the event.
