Year In Review

Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars has impacted my second year in the way I found opportunities and how to choose specific commitments throughout the year without overextending myself. Dunn Scholars was able to connect me with people who have done things in their respective industry that I would be interesting in exploring. This made making a connection with them easier. This year has consisted of many changes, adaptations, and learning. Looking back on this year, it was a year about choices and choosing things that would better your future. It is easy to commit to things that don’t have long term value but sometimes those commitments don’t allow you to become better. This year in Scholars was very important because it was our last year in the program, and we were able to meet with many different professionals during our meetings as a way to gain professional and academic connections. I was able to connect with one of these professionals and I found myself looking at my double major in a new way. I also got into the Exercise Science program at OSU which I’m proud about because it’s a very competitive program. In dance this year, we were able to travel to show a dance piece. I never imagined this piece would get as much attention as it would, it was a great surprise because we all worked really hard on the piece and it had a powerful message that needed to be shared. I performed a lot more this year than last year and I realized how much I missed performing, it’s something I can’t get rid of. This year I also applied and tried new things that I haven’t done thus far in college.

Year in Review

In the beginning of the year you receive tons of emails and flyers about all the things going on during your first week on campus that it is hard to pick and choose which events to go to. Its a matter of blending your interests with new things you’ve never tried before and that can make you feel like you’re trying to do everything at once. It can be overwhelming but there are certain events that the whole campus looks forward to and ones that are constantly advertised. The Welcome Week concert is one of the biggest and most promoted events on campus. Especially being one of the first events held on campus since the school year started. There was so much curiosity over who would be the performing artist. One of my most memorable moments of being at OSU was the Welcome Week concert when Kehlani and Big Sean performed. These were two artists I liked and had never seen perform before. Because of my major I didn’t get out of class until two hours before the concert started and when I got out of class I could see people waiting and standing  to save their seats in the front row. My friends and I were rushing to get ready so we can go to the concert, have a good view, and just have fun. It was one of my first major events at Ohio State and one of the only times where a majority of students would be together at one time. It was really fun experience and one of my most memorable moments at OSU thus far.

Artifacts

A pair of Sunglasses with Ohio State inscribed on the side of the red arms sit on the counter of my dorm room dresser. It sits there as a reminder of the first couple weeks of school and the fun I had during the Welcome Week concert. During Welcome Week I got a pair of Ohio State sunglasses from one of the many stands that crowded the Oval and RPAC walkway during Buckeye Frenzy. During all of these events, you get so many different items with different logos on them that it’s hard to keep track and not lose anything. Everyone jokes that this is the “time to stock up on free things” and “bring a backpack” because there are so many people giving out a plethora of things. There were so many different large scale events during the first couple of weeks that it is hard to pinpoint a specific time when I got the sunglasses, but it was definitely during my first couple of weeks at The Ohio State University. However, I know it was before the Welcome Week Concert. When getting ready for the Welcome Week concert, it was one of the few times when it was actually warm and sunny in Ohio. I knew I needed sunglasses for the concert and decided to wear them seeing as I didn’t know when I would ever wear them again. This artifact represents my first few weeks at Ohio State, the Welcome Week concert, and a fun time with new people that would always be memorable. It’s such a specific item to my experience because you can’t get it anywhere else but Ohio State.

About Me

My name is Taylor Hurd and I am from Somerset, New Jersey. I graduated from Stuart Country Day of the Sacred Heart in Princeton, NJ. Currently I am double majoring in Dance & Pre-Exercise Science. I chose to major in dance due to my passion for dance. I have a deep interest in furthering my professional dance career and potentially dancing in a company or on Broadway. I am also interested in Physical Therapy and the movement and muscles of the body. Science and how it affects people in their daily lives is something I find compelling and everchanging which makes it even more interesting because there’s always something to learn and improve upon. I am truly passionate about dancing and finding new ways to help people reach their full physical and athletic potential after battling an injury or surgery. I think it’s also important to think about ways to improve the body so that it will have reduced risk to injury and finding new ways to exercise the body to prevent injury. All of these things are extremely important to me which is why I chose to double major. In deciding to double major, I had the support of my support of my family and friends. I currently live with my mom, dad, and younger brother who attends the Pennington School in Pennington, NJ. My friends and family have always supported me in everything I do
