ALEX HORTON
About
Alex is currently a student at the Ohio State University studying Arts & Science.
He is very interested in the visual communications side of design, specifically advertisement, package design, and merchandise for firms or small clients. Alex has always liked making user experience better in an aesthetic and satisfying way.
Art has been a hobby of his for a very long time and he recently got into design to put use to that hobby into a way to help others. He has the intuition that being able to create for a living is a privilege and very enjoyable at times. He came into this field from engineering because he really enjoyed the aspects of engineering more focused on aspects of design, such as the intricate problem solving. Alex feels as though he is a better fit here rather than engineering and will utilize things he learned there to further his abilities here. He is a hard worker and his past experience in art and design makes him a good fit for almost anything that need be solved in a design setting.
“Design is thinking made visual.”
-Saul Bass
What Design Means to Me…
Design is art put into practicality. It takes a lot to make design good per se, but if it does go that extra mile, it makes something a better experience than it would be otherwise. Design takes many shapes and forms that you see every day all around the world. Even in these many forms, true good design has one goal, to make an experience better and more enjoyable for people as a whole.
Past Projects
In high school Alex took a class called SWAG (School to Work Advanced Graphics) where they did a lot of design work for their community, including making hiring adverts for their local parks & rec department. He also took part in the state governors art exhibition during high school in which he made it to the state level with an experimental photograph. He has been working with a small music collective since mid 2019 designing album covers, advertisements, and merchandise.
Here are a couple examples of his work:
Personal Info
Alex grew up in a few different places, he went from Parma, OH to San Diego, CA, and then moved back here to Columbus as a teenager. He has always been keen to city life and definitely prefers the atmosphere over a more rural setting. He finds it easy to relax in such a place and is able to find respite in the hustle and bustle. He loves working with others and am excited to meet people with the same passion for creation as him. Alex’s hobbies include drawing, photography, video games, and learning new languages. He is very into modern street fashion, minimalist design, and vaporwave aesthetics. His favorite colors, especially to use in design, are pink, mint, and black. He enjoys indie surf rock, as well as lo-fi hip-hop, and feels as though they both influence his art a fair amount.
