Studio Space Rendering: Process

Production

To start off this project I constructed a roughly 200 sq. ft. grid on my drawing pad. I wanted to incorporate a tilted ceiling as I’ve always seen a connection to nature in them and they’re very calming for me. I found a way to flow the grid over said ceiling and finalized my starting grid template.

From there I started sketching out some furniture and placement ideas on tracing paper.

I really liked a few of the pieces I placed on the tracing paper at this stage, especially the way the window and desk were done, as well as a few decorative elements like the speakers and recessed lights, so I started my real piece by drawing those big structural elements. I did my best to find realistic-ish proportions for things like the desk and computer, and for the window I just did 5 x 6 so I would have a very large light source and shelf that looked out into the landscape outside.

After this I added some detail work to the desk like peripherals and the computers internals. I also added a plant to further that connection to nature in a very technology heavy environment.

My next step was to create a few more decorative details, so I added those can lights from the iterative process as well as some knick-knacks

I then added some wall art to spice up the area as it felt a bit empty.

Next I decided to add some furniture like the couch and chair, and I also started to test out some shadows. I also added a rug to add some texture.

I added another window and a bookshelf to be able to place some more light and objects into the scene.

I then tried to incorporate a bit of 2-point perspective with these ceiling mounted speakers and I feel it worked out pretty well.

I started to add some more wall details and little objects to take up some more visual space.

I then further developed my shadows and detailed the decorations a bit more.

I continued adding little objects and developing shadows to show the light paths in the room

This was probably my favorite step, I split each vertical column in half and then starting to create a texture reminiscent of wood flooring to make the scene a lot more lively and realistic. The texture was very fun to create, I just used the knowledge I already had of how wood flows and drew some knots to work with, the rest was essentially just letting my hand shake to create a natural look and flowing lines down the boards. I also added some more furniture to take up foreground space.

This was essentially the end of my process, just finishing up the wood floor and deepening the contrast with the shadows.

The whole process for this assignment was honestly really enjoyable and relaxing. It felt very satisfying to just kind of create this room out of nothing and have it feel like an actual space I’d enjoy being in. The project definitely help improve upon my drawing skills and taught me a lot about depth and perspective.
