Site Leader for MLK Day of Service

I was a site leader for MLK Day of Service through Pay it Forward on January 16th, 2017. This was such a rewarding experience for both myself and my group members! I lead ice breaker activities, accompanied my group to the Columbus Metropolitan Library in Gahanna to help serve the community by organizing and shelving their books, and at the end of the day conducted a reflection process with my group members to emphasize why we helped serve on MLK Day. Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of service, and he dedicated his life to helping others. He saw things that were wrong in the world, and then committed himself to making a change through his actions and good deeds. We can all learn a lot from MLK, and being a site leader and participating in the MLK Day of Service was a great way to remember him and continue to carry out his dream.

Year in Review

The 2017-2018 academic school year was both incredibly busy-

and encouraging for me! I think one of the most influential aspects of this year in particular was my determination to get involved in every way possible, both through The Fisher College of Business and organizations outside of my college. It was also important to me to continue with my past involvements as well. I participated in the Business Scholars program for a second year, which provided me with the opportunity to attend multiple networking events and professional development activities. I also maintained my position as a student manager at Connecting Grounds Cafe, and my increased duties as manager allowed me to expand upon my individualization strength by learning how to effectively delegate tasks to other student employees on my shifts. In the fall of 2017, I rushed Delta Sigma Pi Professional business fraternity and was offered a bid, which has already transformed my college experience in so many ways.

I was elected to be the Vice President of CommunityService for my pledge class, which was both challenging and rewarding. I lead my pledge class of twenty of my peers in service around the Columbus Community by making blankets for a nearby homeless shelter and by committing our time to the local Ohio Rabbit House. Through DSP, I have been able to completely transform myself as a business professional, and have been able to meet over a hundred of my closest friends and role models all through the same organization. I was able to network with a variety of companies, from Nationwide to Goodyear to Marathon to the J.M. Smucker company. Through our pillars of brotherhood, service, and professionalism, I have become a more well-rounded business student and person as a whole.

Aside from Connecting Grounds and DSP, I had the distinct privilege to be selected as the Sustainability Chair for Park-Stradley’s Hall Council. This position has allowed me to further explore my passion for environmentalism and share my knowledge with the 1,100 residents in my residence hall. I was able to lead my sustainability committee in hosting a monthly events to promote the importance of living a sustainable lifestyle.

In March, I was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in my first case competition through Johnson & Johnson, and our team was selected to be a finalist. This process was stressful, yet my team and I endured and completed in depth sensitivity analyses, competitive analyses, an inclusive marketing strategy, as well as a pricing strategy for the acquisition of a new company. This process helped me to improve my teamwork skills, and gave me a realistic view at a real-world business problem. I am proud of all our accomplishments with this case!

To top it all off, in the spring of 2018 I was accepted into the prestigious Honors Cohort program, as well as the Consumer Product Goods Cluster. I had to go through multiple rounds of interviews, essays, and video responses, and am so happy that all my hard work has paid off. Here’s to this year, and the continuation of success in the future!

About Me

My name is Jessica Hook, and I am a FisherDirect Honors student at The Ohio State University’s Max M. Fisher College of Business and a member of the Business Scholars program. Currently, I am pursuing a specialization in Marketing along with a minor in Communication Technology. I intend to graduate in May of 2020. I have a strong interest in brand marketing and product development. As an individual, I am always quick to learn other team members strengths and treat people with consistency. Taking on responsibility and arranging tasks comes easy to me! I am outspoken and always the first one to introduce myself to new people. The creative side of me loves drawing and painting, and I really aspire to incorporate that into my future career!

In high school I was thoroughly involved in clubs and organizations. I was the President of French Club, Secretary of NHS, Community Service Facilitator for Leadership Challenge, and an officer of Students Against Destructive Decisions. I was also an active member in National French Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Key Club, and Newspaper Club. Throughout my first year at Ohio State, I have formed some fantastic new relationships with peers and faculty. I have enjoyed volunteering my time with Pay it Forward’s Community Commitment event and Site Leading for their MLK Day of Service. One of my favorite recent events was helping out with the Day in  a Life of a Buckeye Program!

At OSU I look forward to participating in the STEP and Honors programs, and continuing to grow in the BSP community. I am currently training to be a manager at Connecting Grounds coffee shop on North campus, where you can find me on Sunday and Monday nights! I will be rushing Delta Sigma Pi Professional Business Fraternity in the Fall of 2017, and will be joining American Marketing Association as well. Down the road, I intend to explore the possibilities of Cooperatives with businesses in the Columbus area and am interested in applying for the Honors Cohort program.
