G.O.A.L.S. as a First Year Student

G.O.A.L.S

Global Awareness

When it comes to becoming more globally aware, I plan on expanding my knowledge and acceptance of others through taking new courses and possibly getting involved in cultural organizations. I plan on possibly taking a course that focuses on the culture of another country or region to help myself become more globally aware. My roommate is from Zimbabwe, which has helped me gain a lot of perspective on how different the lives of others can be, even when they live in the same room as you. By taking classes or joining organizations focusing on other cultures, I can further appreciate the world around me and understand that every person that walks by is unique and has their own way of viewing life.

Original Inquiry

For this goal, it’s slightly different for me than for a lot of students most likely. As an actuarial science major, research is most likely not going to be something that I do very much of in the near future. Instead, I plan on challenging myself with my course work and discovering new topics and ideas to broaden my understanding of the world around me. Also, it is still possible for me to change my major, and if that should happen then research might become a much more feasible endeavor. In any case, I plan on delving into the resources provided at this university so that I can discover ideas that are new to me and possibly new to the world as well.

Academic Enrichment

I plan on using my Academic Plan to aid me in pushing myself towards being the best student I can be and at the same time to aid me in pursuing my career. When it comes to my GEs, I want to take courses that interest me, but at the same time courses that are stimulating. I am at this university to receive a quality education and I plan to make full use of the challenging courses offered here at this university. Challenging myself is what is going to help me be prepared for my future career and for life in general. Doing the bare minimum is not something I would like to make a habit of, because I never plan on “just scraping by” when it comes to life. I strive to be the best I can be at anything I attempt, and since I am currently a student, I plan on being the best student possible.

Leadership Development

To develop my leadership skills, I plan on becoming actively involved with actuarial club and also I plan on having an internship or two in which I will likely work in a group setting, where I will surely mature as a leader. Being a leader isn’t always about being the head honcho. In actuarial club, for example, I will most likely not be the president (that doesn’t mean I can’t try), but I can still become an established member and help those who are new and my peers as well. As an intern, from what I have been told, most interns are assigned to a group who work under an actuary and work together on tasks. While working in this setting, I can develop leadership skills by taking charge when necessary and also learning when to sit back and listen to others, which are both key components to being a good leader.

Service Engagement

Outside of this university, I have been involved with service through my church since middle school. I plan on continuing this service, as my church is very close to OSU, and plan on engaging in service here on campus as well. Through my church I have been on a mission trip, helped at a food pantry, and also served breakfast to those who struggle to put food on the table in downtown Columbus. Here at school, I have considered taking part in BuckeyeServe, and also in various other organizations to give back to the community. I have not yet decided on an organization that I am going to take part in, but I am sure as this year progresses I will find my niche and start giving back here on campus.
