I was directed by my academic supervisor to look into BMES. After looking into it and seeing their presentations both at the mini involvement fair and prior to convocation at our first survey class I decided to join.  I went to my first meeting last week, where we were paired up with our mentor/mentor family. It was very enjoyable, coincidentally a couple of people I already knew were there and I got to meet a few others, including those in my mentor family. We did a series of challenges as well; these included the classic marshmellow tower challenge, catapulting skittles at a target and playing catch with balloons. My mentor family won the tower contest and ultimately scored the most points! This was a great first meeting, I felt as if I was able to talk and hangout with some new people including my mentor family but also some others. I hope to continue cultivating these relationships and build a strong community of friends in my major. I believe that I will greatly benefit from joining BMES as I will continue meeting\ people of similar interest as well as learning more about the major, the field and hopefully begin to create a network within BME.

I am very excited to continue as a member of this organization, a large factor in this is that I found the leaders to be very nice, smart and exciting individuals. In fact, I spoke with one the leaders after the meeting and he was very engaged and seemed to be genuinely interested in my questions. Further, they were very engaged in the activities and were clearly well prepared and brought loads of energy to the meeting. This was great, especially because I am a very high energy individual, seeing similar individuals leading the org made me feel instantly more comfortable and I was able to enjoy the meeting that much more. Seeing their demeanor also helped in that it showed that the leaders were my peers, and that I could potentially serve in such a role should I be lucky enough to be chosen. As such, I have turned in an application to be on a planning committee.

The vast number of clubs and various interests covered was a little daunting a first, however I believe I have found a couple of clubs that are very interesting and BMES is most certainly one of these. I can see myself being a member of BMES for sometime. Fortunately, finding this club was quite easy, it shares a name with my own major which only made it easier. However, I can understand the difficulties of finding the right club considering the sheer number of orgs. While I understand this sounds backwards, it almost feels as if it is impossible to see all of the student orgs offered and it is worrying that maybe the “right” club just has not been found yet. However, this is a perfect example of letting perfect be the enemy of good as there are so may incredible clubs to join and so much to explore therein which is an incredible strength of Ohio State.

About Me

My name is Jack Haney and I am a second-year from Columbus, Ohio majoring in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. While I am strongly considering going into law, my goal is to find a career in which I am engaging with others as much as possible as well as having a positive impact on anyone I can. To that end, I am also considering obtaining an advanced degree and teaching at a University. However, the ideal situation would be to practice law and teach. I hope to live a life of service to others and my community, I understand the tremendous opportunity I have to be alive in such a monumental time. Further, I understand the responsibility one has to make an impact on those around them. I am a strong believer in the tremendous impact a simple act of kindness can have on others and I hope to act on this belief. I am further a strong believer in the impact one can have over time through their work and hope to strike a balance between both immediate and long-term impact through my life.

Beyond the classroom, I am a member of the Undergraduate Student Government within which I am currently a Recruitment Coordinator in Community Relations, sit on the University Senate, the University Wellness Collaborative and am an alternate on the University Conduct Board. In addition to USG, I am a member of STEM EE Scholars, the D1 Club Baseball team, and I am working on achieving full membership within CCWA as well as freelancing for the Lantern. As of August 2020, I have begun a position on the board of directors of a local non-profit, the WORTH Foundation, as well as a Fellowship with the Ohio Democratic Party and Biden/Harris campaign.

In high school, I was involved in baseball, the senior leadership council, theater, Model UN, the school paper, and Youth in Government as well as being a co-president of my school’s Diversity and Inclusion club and co-founding the Peer Intervention Group. I worked hard to be a leader in, as well as a positive representative of, my community and I would love to, and intend to, continue doing so while at OSU. I love to engage with others, be active, and explore new areas of interest and I hope to continue to do so at OSU.

Year in Review

This year was certainly a tale of two semesters. Not only did I change my major at the halfway point but I was able to put myself in better positions to really thrive in the second semester. That is not to say the first semester was a loss of course. I learned a lot about myself, Ohio State, and the kind of future I wanted to make for myself at OSU and beyond.

Being a commuter, finding my place on campus was challenging at first. For most of the first semester I bounced around multiple student organizations and spaces to find somewhere I could call home. Near the end of the semester I applied to join Under Graduate Student Government. From the moment I applied to now has been a sprint, during which I met some incredible people and was able to participate in some amazing projects. The most meaningful experience through USG and likely on campus was helping with the eventual winning campaign for Student Body President and Vice President. I learned a lot about the organization, student life on campus, OSU, and I was having a lot of fun and growing as an individual. Now, as the year closes I had the opportunity to apply for leadership within USG and on-campus and this next year I will be serving as a University Senator as well as a Recruitment Coordinator for the Community Relations branch of USG.

I also grew academically. Coming into OSU, I experienced success in the classroom however OSU is a different animal entirely. I was forced to make improvements in a lot of areas such as time-management, resource allocation, and in my general study habits. This experience allowed me to succeed and I believe it will set me up for future success academically that will help me achieve my goals.

A final note would be the challenges we are all facing in the Covid-19 outbreak. I would be remiss if I did not mention the challenges it brought. Not only has it been socially difficult, but I was looking forward to my time in USG, the season with the Club Baseball team and achieving full membership within CCWA. Academically it has forced me to be much more diligent with my time and be a better self-monitor. All of that said, the most important thing about this time has been to be in touch with what is going on around me. I am extremely fortunate to have my health and to be spending time with my family.  My mom is a Nurse Practitioner in the SICU at the James so this has being there for her has been very important. All in all, this is a difficult time for everyone and will likely be what everyone remembers 2020 for. It has certainly served as a learning and growth opportunity for me.

I was fortunate to experience quite a bit in my first year at OSU. It has been unlike any other experience I have had. To now, I have never spent more than 2 years at the same school but I can not wait for the 3 years I have ahead of me at OSU. I feel that the lessons I learned this year have allowed me to grow tremendously and have set me up for a great next few years.
