Link 4: Packaging

One of the main problems in the strawberry supply chain is temperature fluctuation, which can cause condensation inside the packaging and increase the potential for fungal disease infection. Frequently the biggest problem happens when the strawberries are no longer properly cooled from the retail outlet to the consumer’s refrigerator. During this period of time, temperature fluctuation and condensation occur frequently which increases the risk of fungal disease infection.

Individual plastic containers are used to package the strawberries for sale in the retail market. These plastic containers are then placed in corrugated boxes which are then wrapped in plastic in order to insure the lowest risk of decay and infection. They are placed in refrigerated trucks in order to keep them cold while they are shipped to their destination. All of the packaging and shipping containers used in the packaging of strawberries have an environmental impact that is taken into account by the strawberry industry. Engineers have spent time and money in order to cut costs without reducing the quality of the product. Packaging has been improved over the years as cheaper, more efficient, and environmentally friendly plastic has been implemented. Also the refrigerated trucks are packed tightly so that there is less air in the truck which reduces the amount of energy needed to maintain a constant temperature.
