Year in Review

My first year of college is ending in less than 3 weeks, and I still can’t believe that it went by that fast. Coming into OSU, I was terrified (as most freshmen are) of making friends, finding my classes, and finding my place on this big campus. I can proudly say that I’ve learned a lot this past year, and know that I have a lot more to learn in the next 3 years.

I’ve learned to appreciate my family, since I’ve never had to live away from them, and I think it really brought us closer together. I’ve learned that OSU was definitely the right choice for me, and I fall more and more in love with it every single day. I’m also happy that I picked the right major on my first try, and have taken a business class that has made me excited for the future.

I’ve also continued to develop my professional skills. I’ve attended various resume workshops and listened in on interview skills speeches. I’ve been given the opportunity to interview for various positions, succeeding in some, failing in others, but ultimately learning more about myself and my strengths and weaknesses. I’ve learned that I need to be just as strong when I get a rejection as I am happy when I get an acceptance.

I’ve also learned that it’s ok to not always be the smart kid. In high school, my GPA was never below a 4.5, and I knew how high school worked and knew how to succeed. I assumed I’d do the same in college and be fine. I quickly learned that college is a whole other game. It’s a lot harder to compete in college than it ever was in high school (especially with a population as big as ours), but that’s ok. I’ve accepted that I won’t always get 100 on my all my tests, and sometimes I will fail. I’m glad to say that I still worked hard and am still learning to manage my courses, and though my GPA isn’t a perfect 4.0, it’s still good enough for the Dean’s List. I’m still figuring out this whole college thing, and I’m sure other people are too, I’ve learned that if I need help, I need to ask for it (not to be afraid to talk to my professor or TA). I’m definitely getting more used to it, and will hopefully continue to improve in my remaining years.

I’m also excited about next year. I’ve sent out a lot of applications for various positions, getting interviews to some and still waiting on others. But I’m happy to say that next year, I have the wonderful opportunity to be an Honors & Scholars ambassador as well as Marketing and Communications chair for International Affairs Scholars. I’m really excited to work with both programs and further develop my leadership skills.

This year has gone by fast but it was very exciting, and I can’t wait to see what the next years will bring.

Artifacts

Artifact 1:

UN Millennium Development Goal 6

This artifact is my group’s presentation on the UN Millennium Development Goal 6. We were given a goal and told to create a profile and a presentation on it. Our assigned goal was on the UN’s goal to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. I got the opportunity to learn about the causes and spread of the diseases, especially in our focused region of West Africa. I also learned how the UN proposes to combat the diseases and their plans for the future. This artifact helped me understand the UN Millennium Goals as well as the problems facing the world, especially West Africa. It also helped me understand how the world is working together through the UN to combat the diseases, and how important the millennium and sustainability goals are.

Artifact 2:

My second artifact is probably a little cliche; it’s a ticket to my first Buckeye football game. I was never a “born and raised a buckeye” kid: both of my sisters went to Miami in Oxford and my mom doesn’t understand American football. My first time experiencing the Shoe in the south stands of the student section was indescribable. The energy filled the stadium and didn’t leave until we sang Carmen at the end of the game. Of course football is huge here, and it just made me feel that much more proud to be a buckeye and excited to go to this school. Though I’m not a huge football fan, an OSU football game is hard to beat.

Artifact 3:

SpaceX Presentation

This artifact is my group presentation for my BusMHR 3510 class (New Venture Creation). This class is the first class that minor of entrepreneurship & innovation. For this project, we had to get into groups and were assigned companies that really defied the business world at the time of their creation. We then had to do research on the business, its history, and its business plan and why the business worked and present it to the class as if they’re venture capitalists and we’re entrepreneurs looking for their investment. This instantly made me excited to be a business major and an entrepreneurship minor as this is the kind of thing I possibly will be doing in the future. It also improved my public speaking skills and improved my group work skills. It really solidified my choice in major and minor and I’m excited to see what the future has in store.

Artifact 4:

This artifact may be a little controversial, but it’s definitely one of my favorite and a really defining moment for me. This was the #OSU2Mizzou march after the controversy in University of Missouri. Concerned students of OSU marched in support of the protests in Mizzou and in support of #BlackLivesMatter. I’ve been a long time follower of the movement on social media (as well as other movement toward equality), but this is the first real rally that I’ve been in, and it was life changing. Hundreds of students marched across campus to Thompson Library while chanting various BLM sayings (“O-H-I-O racism has got to go”, “Black lives matter”, “racism lives here and so do we” and so on). Then, while gathered around the giant President Thompson statue, black students of OSU shared their stories of how they’ve experienced racism here. It really opened my eyes, that OSU isn’t perfect; we all love it, but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement. It has really made me want to work to bring more diversity and representation to OSU in my remaining years at the university.

About Me

Born in Uzbekistan, a small country in Central Asia, I’ve always had a strong yearning for global awareness, which is why International Affairs Scholars became my first choice. Since living in the US for a little over 10 years, I have discovered my undying passion on things such as social issues, the arts, and world travel. My academic and professional (and overall life goals) all reflect my passions.
My academic goals include having strong grades and graduating with a BSBA, and eventually going back to grad school for an MBA. Because of my passion for music, I hope to one day spark that same interest in someone else through my own record label.

In high school, I participated in our theatre program all 4 years, and by senior year I was stage manager and student director, and through this,  I grew extremely close to our program’s director. He is the most creative, talented, and passionate person I know, and he has inspired, motivated, and encouraged me to follow my dreams. I have learned so much about hard work and perseverance through him that I know I will use academically and professionally.
