Tek8 Research Program

DNA Origami Polymerization

The Tek8 Research Program is a research and outreach program aimed to raise awareness in K-8 students by exposing them to engineering principles in various activities. I was able to work in a research lab that focused on nanotechnology and use my skills and the projects I worked on to translate my findings into an activity for students at a local charter school.

About Me

About Me Part 1

Greetings from the steel city itself! Born and raised in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, I represent black and gold anywhere I go. I am a first year undergraduate majoring in chemical engineering, and aspire to work with different chemicals to help innovate products to improve human life. I have always volunteered heavily in my community from being a Girl Scout Ranger to Key Club and National Honors Society. I also was heavily involved in the Marching Band and Concert Band in our school , competing in national competitions. Being in Girl Scouts and earning the Gold Award, allowed me to open my eyes to issues in the neighborhoods around me, and allowed me to network to a whole new audience. I organized a program to help influence younger students to stay with the music program in school to not only improve their learning capacity, but also grow our music community in high school. In college I plan to join Engineering without Borders to apply my newly acquired engineering skills and help a new community at Ohio State. In the engineering field, I also plan to get into Society of Women Engineers and AlChE for chemical engineers. I hope to gain the professional skills I need to properly approach companies when the time comes. Culturally, I plan to involve myself in the IAA Indian American group on campus, and participate in popular events on campus. I hope that these new clubs and experiences will allow me to expand my viewpoint, and grow as a person.

About Me Part 2

Restorative: Through trial and error I adapt my techniques and skills as I learn through my mistakes along the way of completing a new task. I am very comfortable with accepting my weaknesses only to better myself for the future challenges. I strive to elevate my standards with every task I complete, as my skills grow more advanced with the ground that I am able to cover along the way. There is always room for improvement, no matter what level of skill I obtain.

Learner: Even with a skill mastered, I yearn to still ask questions and learn more along the way. With every conversation or new experience, I enjoy hearing the opinions of others and gauging where my opinion falls on a spectrum. The way I best understand a topic is through a complete evaluation on literature, social media, and professional conversation as I continue to probe people for more answers.

Harmony: I prefer to enter situations with all areas of doubt absent. In order to perform a task, I strive to absorb as much background information as I can before diving head first into a problem.  I enjoy leading, but I prefer to have a handle on the situation to avoid the inevitable gray area that comes with handling a new situation in a group of people. The differing opinions of others helps me to consider a different side of the problem as I continue to strive toward one end goal through symbiotic conversations with my colleagues.

Individualization: I enjoy analyzing how people think. Every time I meet a new person, I will gauge there personality by both engaging in conversation and observing their response. In this way, I can best evaluate how to interact with different people. I am very analytical when it comes to handling new situations in which I may feel vulnerable. However, by using the diverse backgrounds of my colleagues, I can best understand how to handle the group as a whole.

Achiever: The environment of college entices me to try and juggle the various challenges that engineering classes entail. I have always been a hard worker, and cannot fully complete a problem without all background information at hand. I must approach different learning strategies to gain a thorough understanding of the material. The beginning stages of a project drives the gears in my brain to approach all resources, and then formulate my own opinions on the subject before fully tackling the problem.

Columbus To Do List #1

Due to my love of anything sweet and savory, I have chosen the ice cream and desserts list on the Columbus To-Do List. I want to visit some of the more authentic local ice cream shops in Columbus, being that I am from out of the state. I hope that this assignment will allow me to get out of my personal bubble. I am so accustomed to living on campus that I have no idea what Columbus has to offer. I have never lived in the city before, and I am excited to get out of my comfort zone. One experience I have had so far is visiting Jeni’s on the list.
Even before I walked into Jeni’s I could smell it from a mile away. As I walked in, I was surprised by the variety of flavors. Since fall was right around the corner, I decided to embrace the new weather with a scoop of pumpkin spice. It was unlike any ice cream I’ve ever had. It tasted freshly made and each flavor was amplified. I would recommend to anyone looking for a new flavor to try.The environment of Jeni’s is always lively and bustling with new people. I will definitely be going back to Jeni’s soon.

Columbus To-Do List #2

The Pattycake bakery on North High Street included a variety of vegan options for desert lovers. Personally, I am not vegan and do not think I could accommodate my lifestyle to eat only foods that fit that diet. However, after trying a gluten free cookie at the bakery, I would not mind changing my diet if it meant that deserts were as good if not better than deserts made with regular ingredients. The ingredients were also all natural and the food was not oily, so I did not feel guilty even after devouring the variety of pastries that I had gotten. I would recommend Pattycake bakery to everyone even if you are not on a vegan diet. The deserts are so healthy and delicious that your taste buds cannot even recognize the difference!

Columbus To-Do list #3

Whit’s Frozen Custard was very interesting to try considering I have never had the opportunity to try custard in Pittsburgh. I have tried every other type of ice cream/frozen yogurt available, but never did I venture to try custard. Whit’s only offers three flavors which includes there flavor of the week.  However, once you pick your flavor you can drown the ice cream in an endless variety of toppings. I wanted to try the flavor of custard first, so I got the vanilla frozen custard with nuts in a hand dipped waffle cone.  The taste was unlike any ice cream I’ve ever had before. It tasted like a sweeter version of vanilla pudding. I enjoyed trying something I’ve never even seen before, and would definitely recommend this to a friend looking to try something new.

Experiencing Columbus opened my eyes to a new way of adjusting to college. I have lived in Pittsburgh all my life, and loved venturing into the city as I got older and getting used to the culture, sites, and sounds of city life. However, I have never lived in the city before. Living in Ohio State allowed me to find a new way to love college life. There is always a new experience around every corner.  My favorite experience was going to Jeni’s ice cream shop because it is such a widely popularized ice cream shop in Ohio, but I had never heard of it prior to coming to OSU.  I learned that city life is definitely different to get used to, but the various opportunities to try new things is endless. On my own in college, I had the chance to see the city on my own terms. I now want to venture more into the food scene in Columbus to see what famous foods form the culture of the city. I would recommend to anyone venturing out into Columbus that the city is exciting, so be open to trying new foods or activities because you never know how it might open the door to new experiences.

Columbus Adventure with Peer Leader Group

Kafe Kerouac had an unique vibe from the very beginning. When you walk into the small café, you see the walls lined with antique comic books and ornate accessories. We all sat down at a table with each chair a different style from a varied century. The dim lighting added to the effect of this cute coffee shop. I got a peanut butter bar with pretzels inside of it. It melted in my mouth with each bite. I noticed from this experience how varied Columbus is. I am so used to seeing the commercialized big restaurants around every corner, but little did I know that Columbus offers so much more. It has character with each little coffee shop that you never know is inches away from your doorstep. I would definitely go back and recommend to a friend who wants to try a little bit of behind the scenes Columbus.

Artifacts

Artifact #2

In college, the biggest impact on my experience as a freshman at OSU has been involvement in Engineers without Borders.  I am a member of  their local projects team and recently have started volunteering at a local middle school in the city of Columbus.  The program is called After School All Stars (ASAS) and involves teaching middle school students principles of engineering through hands-on projects. I am able to see the kids grow as their motor skills improve and they are able to see tangibly how engineering applies to every day life. I love how each of them are able to contribute to a team and learn how to improve and grow with each trial and error. They form different strategies each time on how to tackle the challenge at hand, and it amazes me to see the extent with which they are able to analyze a situation. I have always enjoyed volunteering with kids and teaching them new material because every time I do, I end up learning something new.
