Global Awareness:
Global Awareness is one of the aspects of GOALS that I have struggled to develop as of now. Very recently I have been making a greater effort to consume media from news outlets not based out of the united states like the BBC.
Original Inquiry:
I feel that my activities this summer fit into the category of original inquiry. I had the opportunity to conduct research through the Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute. At the end of the summer I was able to present my own research project on the timing of concussion incident reports in high school sports in north east Ohio. I had a really tough time coming up with an original research question that pertained to the work I was doing in the lab and I really had to challenge my self. Once I came up with my question I had a lot of fun digging into the data the Cleveland Clinic. Because of my experience in research I feel that I have really excelled in developing original inquiry.
Academic Enrichment:
I have recently decided that as part of academic enrichment I will be auditing one or two courses next semester to develop my skills in fine arts. I always loved art in high school but I have had little time to practice since graduating and my work load in engineering has made it impossible to take art classes in college. After speaking with my academic advisor we decided that I could try to audit some art courses. I am hoping to either take a digital animation or painting class next semester. I think enriching my interests outside of my major will help me to really focus my creative energy in engineering settings.
Leadership Development:
Leadership development has been another struggle I have faced i the last year. I was elected the vice president of one of the student organizations I am involved with at the end of last year and I have had a real struggle keeping up with it now. When I applied for this position last year I did not realize how my year of service would effect the amount of free time I had outside of homework and I have been struggling to keep up with many of my responsibilities. I hope to get better at time management so that I can further develop my leadership skills through this opportunity I have been given as the vice president of a club.
Service Engagement:
I hope to develop more in the area of service engagment in the next year. This year I will be attempting to complete my year of service wit St. Stephen’s community house in Linden. I have so far had some problems communicating with organizers a St. Stephen’s and have found the experience very frustrating. However I have hope that the communication issues I have been experiencing will be resolved. I hope that my year of service will give me a better perspective on the challenges faced by members of the community in Columbus so that I can be a better citizen of the areas that I now call home.
