OCIO/ODEE Rap

At our recent OCIO/ODEE departmental picnic I was inspired to write a rap by our OCIO’s encouraging words and our drummer, Ryan Holland’s killer beats. Here it is…it may possibly be the most eloquent piece of poetry you’ve ever heard…

Intro: I wrote a rap, and that’s a fact, about ODEE, and O-C-I-O, here we go…

OCIO and ODEE
The most amazing people you’ve ever seen

Did great stuff in FY14
The most amazing people you’ve ever seen

All day long we’re led by Mike
He’s pumping out stuff everybody likes

So nice to be here at Mount Hall
With some good food please eat it all

With the auditory brilliance if RockIT
Kevin Steve Terri Ryan and Bob-by

Play some corn hole and stay awhile
Grab a coke and share a smile

Mike says we aunt doing blue chips
We’re going in a different direction on this ship

The ship is large the waters treacherous
But we got the folks to do it the best

We all got some freaking goals
So come on let’s burn some red hot coals

Teaching learning research nn outreach
OCIO and ODEE let’s storm the beach!

24 Hours with Google Glass

We have a set of Google Glass in Enterprise Applications and I used them for about 24 hours last week. Here are my thoughts in no particular order. I’m sure as I use them more, and more apps are created, I’ll change some of my opinions.

  •  The most compelling attribute to me is a nice translucent rectangle just above your line of eyesight. It seems to be at the perfect angle, available with minimal distraction if you want it, but easy to ignore if you don’t. With the number of times I reach for my phone in a day (easily 100-200) this could save a lot of time. It also might reduce distractions (not sure about that one yet).
  • Battery life seemed to be 2-4 hours….certainly not a lot if you’re going to sue it all day.
  • There still aren’t a lot of apps yet.
  • To no one’s surprise, the more invested in the Google ecosystem (Gmail, Google Music, Google+) the more valuable it will be.
  • I have an iPhone and it integrated quite well.
  • Driving directions were quite useful…although you need to open the MyGlass app on your phone to get your current location…could be a safety concern when driving.
  • It doesn’t work with WPA wireless networks, so it won’t work on osuwireless. Tethered to my iPhone via Bluetooth and Hotspot it worked pretty well though. I’d think they’ll need to get it working on WPA.
  •  I wore it in public and at work. People I knew asked me about it but I didn’t see strangers staring at me (at least no more than normal for being in a famous rock band…RockIT…LOL).
  • The overall user experience is lacking. It’s not awful but certainly isn’t instantly intuitive.

My overall assessment is that it isn’t “ready for prime time”. That said, I see tremendous use in Glass and/or competitors. I know there are huge privacy hurdles, but I’m all for something that’s minimally intrusive (I already wear prescription glasses) that can put a lot of my desired content right in front of my face rather than having to pull my phone out of my pocket. I’m excited to see how it evolves.
