Memorial Day – Remembrance & Renewal (by Amy Rettig)

We remember.

We remember that first patient we were successful with an IV placement. We remember the patient that “just didn’t feel right”. We remember the patient that reached out, saying “Thank you, you are an angel”. We remember our patients.

We remember.

We remember our first preceptor who  guided us through putting in that first IV. We remember the supervisor that listened when we reported on the patient “that just didn’t look right”. We remember crying with a colleague because a patient at end of life said “Thank you.”

We remember.

We remember where we were on September 11, 2001 when the twin towers fell. We remember where we were November 28, 2016 when a student drove into a crowd on OSU campus. We remember our community in these times.

We renew.

We care for our self when we talk about these things. We care for our self when we reflect on these things. We care for our self when we release – over and over – to allow space for gratitude.

Memorial Day – a day of remembrance and renewal.
