Design Concepts: Screening and Scoring
In lab 5, the team used decision matrices to screen and score all five AEV designs against set criteria. Team members argued the merits and disadvantages of each design with regards to the balance experienced when turning on the track, the amount of blockage encountered on the rail system, the center-of-gravity, the maintenance, the durability, the cost efficiency, and how environmentally friendly each AEV design was when compared to the reference provided in the course materials.
In the concept screening scoresheet, each design was rated with either a zero, meaning it was neutral when compared to the reference AEV, a positive sign, meaning the design would surpass the reference, or a negative sign, suggesting the design would underperform the reference AEV. Once the designs were rated, the net score of each design was calculated.
The concept screening scoresheet table for the team and their individual designs is shown below:
In the concept scoring matrix, each criteria was assigned a weight out of 100%. Additionally, each design was then scored on a scale of zero to five, with zero being the most unfavorable rating and five being the most. After all criteria was considered for each design, the scores were multiplied by the weights of the individual criterion and added. The total score for all designs was recorded.
The concept scoring matrix table for the team and their individual designs is shown below:
Through the use of the screening scoresheet and the scoring matrix, the team can easily identify which designs meet set criteria and which do not. . As each individual design and the final design was screened and scored, the strengths and weaknesses of each design were clear.
Important takeaways were drawn from lab o5, including that:
- Concept screening matrix is a quick method to down-select ideas. And according to the net score from Concept Screening Scoresheet, only the team’s design (Design A) and Merveille’s design (Design E) should be continued and further improved.
- Concept scoring matrix can provide a better resolution than a screening matrix. It will provide great definition of concepts and help define the final project. According to the Concept Scoring Matrix, only the team’s design (Design V) should be developed.
