This lab provided Group B with the opportunity to brainstorm design ideas for the Advanced Energy Vehicle. Provided to the group were a three-dimensional sample model of the AEV, a collection of organized parts and tools, lab procedure guidelines, and the project objective. The group became familiar with the vehicle by working together to assemble the parts as illustrated in the model and measuring the final product’s dimensions. From this information, the group brainstormed possible vehicle designs.
The team concluded that in order to complete a functional design, various features from each sketch must be incorporated. It was decided that the front enclosure must be made to reduce air resistance, the Arduino must be located a greater distance from the magnet, the propellers must be located in the rear and be powered by two drive motors, and that the design must incorporate lighter-weight material than the plastic supplied in the kit. These design evaluations have made it possible for the group to proceed constructing a vehicle with a better understanding of important design features. Without these experiences, the group would proceed with guesswork and likely make wasteful decisions.
