G.O.A.L.S.

G(Global Awareness): to be a successful scholar in global awareness, I will have to understand different cultures and customs to work well with diverse people and connect better to the world. This will allow me to have knowledge on different opinions and perspectives by not being so branching out of the world that I am most familiar with. Resources in the education abroad department would be adequate in developing this aspect of G.O.A.L.S. Education abroad is a good way to learn about cultures and people outside the US. It always is important to Biological Sciences because it could be a way for you to broaden knowledge on other groups of people and volunteer to help others which is important in the pre-med to show you honestly want to be an empathetic citizen in your community. Challenges I might face are balancing classes while trying to do education abroad because taking online courses are not interactive as a in class environment. Also, taking classes in social diversity, culture and ideas, and global studies help explore global awareness.

O(Original Inquiry): original inquiry deals with creating your own individual experiences dealing with areas within the major you are pursuing. This includes research and shadowing and global community projects. Being a Biological Sciences Scholar, there are many opportunities available to engage in original inquiry with the Wexner Medical Center being right next door and plenty of research opportunities with OSU graduates. Challenges can include reaching out and finding different opportunities because most post-graduates are very busy and there are many others trying to reach out so finding opportunities for original inquiry is a trial and error journey.

A(Academic Enrichment): academics are pursued both in and out of the classroom.  Taking this step further in your education heightens educational experience. Techniques needed to reach academic enrichment are efficiency in time  management and motivation to keep you pushing through all the courses that you take. Challenges can include trying to balance different courses at the same time. Resources and people to use to fulfill academic enrichment include office hours and study sessions. I have been engaged in taking courses that make me a well rounded person and for the pre-med track like psychology 1100 and French 1103.

L(Leadership Development): Leadership development allows you to become someone who can be relied on in real life experiences and give exploration outside of the academic environment. It builds skills needed to go through everyday life and interactions between your own community and others. I am involved in PASS and YSP which have given me opportunities to be a leader like Scholar Ambassadors and represent OSU as a whole to younger students. The scholars program also give plenty of ways to be a leader like becoming a leader your second year by being a media head of the program.

S(Service Engagement): Being a Biological Science Scholar provides me with an abundance of opportunities to volunteer. A bunch of opportunities are added to Carmen to represent OSU and Biological Science Scholars in services all over Columbus. I was able to participate in Faith Mission volunteering where we helped make and serve for to a community in Columbus outside of campus living. Some challenges that may come in service engagement are trying to relate or interact with different groups of people. This can be resolved by reading the program information before diving into a service project and understanding what you are engaging in.
