Has the Dunn Scholars program opened any doors for your Ohio State development, either professionally or personally? Please explain.

Overall, my time in the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars (DSWS) has allowed me to build connections around the campus at The Ohio State University.  These connections have both been personable and professional, and the two tend to overlap.  Personally, you can see a fellow DSWS face around campus whenever you go out to class or walk around.  With a campus so large, it is nice to be able to say “Hi” to someone everywhere you go.  It was also great to build some more friendships this year and join clubs that fellow 2nd year scholars are apart of.  I was introduced to the Survivor Club because of DSWS and hopefully I will have time for it next semester.

Professionally, DSWS has allowed me to make many connections in the sports world and show the various opportunities around Columbus.  My internship with the Ohio State Athletic Department- Fan Experience would no be possible without some help from DSWS alumni who work there.  Several 3rd and 4th years helped me establish myself into the role I am in now and I am truly grateful to be where I am now because of their advice and help.  I was even able to contact a now college graduated DSWS alumni for a fantastic sports opportunity.  This allowed me to work for the Greater Columbus Sports Commission during the OHSAA high school basketball and football state championships.  It was a great experience and one that definitely added skills and experience to my professional resume.

Year in Review

There were a lot of memorable experiences during the first couple weeks of my first academic year at Ohio State.  The one that meant the most to me was getting my job in the Marketing & Fan Experience Department at the Athletic Department.  I found out about this great experience at a booth during orientation.  I emailed the contact and was able to schedule an interview.  The interview went well and I got hired to the Street Team.  This experience helped make my whole college year great.  I got to go to a lot of basketball games for free, got behind the scenes look at athletic events and management, and got to engage with many different people and fans I wouldn’t have if I did not have the job. My first few weeks on the job were alright, it sucked that I had to walk half an hour to the Fawcett Center right after class in khakis.  Besides the walk though, it was a fun experience in the beginning weeks.  I got to use photo shop to make graphics for the scoreboard, make flyers, and selected music for the hockey games.

I think this opportunity was a great building block for my freshman year.  It helped me with time management as I had to plan out my schedule and figure out when I was going to do work and when I was going to do school work.  Also, it gave me a great chance to get into the sport industry and build connections.

Artifacts

There are a couple of artifacts that represent my early year experience from the Year in Review section.  They are both the same type of object, just for different events.  My artifacts are all-access field passes for the Big Ten soccer playoff game and Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championship.  These field passes were given to me to work the event which I was able to through the Athletic Department.  The Big Ten Indoor Track & Field pass was very cool just because it was through Big Ten Network so I got to work with TV crews and different personalities that go into producing and editing the showing of the championship.  So the pass let me go down to the track, so I could record stats and relay information to the truck, and let me see the behind the scenes of filming the championship.  Plus, I got to travel up to Geneva, Ohio with a couple people from the Athletic Department.  With the Big Ten soccer game, I got to be on the field as a ball boy and security with the pass they gave me. It was pretty cool to watch a soccer game from field level and how intense it was.  I was really nervous to do security with the game went into penalty kicks because it looked like Dayton may storm the field.

I think the artifacts are a big step in developing a career.  They show different fields of experience in the sports world that I have accomplished and look great on the resume.

About Me

I am Max Edwards from Sterling Heights, MI which is 30 minutes outside of Detroit.  I am a huge sports fan and have played football and baseball at the high school varsity level.  When not involved in playing sports, I am grilling at the concession stand at a water park or umpiring baseball games. Also, I announced basketball games at my high school to keep myself involved during the winter. I am also very interested in history, specifically wars and Presidents.  I also graduated top 20 of my high school class. When I’m not busy I like to hang out with friends or just relax and watch a good movie.

Screenshot_2015-03-17-07-24-21-1-1-1At Ohio State I plan to major in Sport Industry with minors in Business, Social Media & Marketing, and Statistics.  I would also like to maintain a B average or above.  As a learner I like to figure out problems as long as I have some background on the subject.  Working in groups is really beneficial for me as I tend to like to lead.  At Ohio State I want to work toward my goal of working in a professional sports team’s front office.  Hopefully my experiences at Ohio State will help me make connections and give me skills to achieve my goal.  In the summer I would be interested in interning at local minor league baseball teams.
