Objective 1

Recruit and train family peer recovery supporters in each county or that can serve each county. These peer supporters will be trained using the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment [SBIRT] approach.

Expected Outcomes:

  1. Outcome 1.1: Conduct at least 21 outreach and recruitment activities at open Narcotics Anonymous and with faith-based communities to identify possible individuals who can act as peer recovery supporters.
  2. Outcome 1.2: Work with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (Ohio MHAS) to hold 3 certification training sessions with the county intervention areas.
  3. Outcome 1.3: Over the three year grant period, we aim to have 60 peer recovery supporters, trained and certified, in the intervention counties with 15 by the end of year 1, an additional 20 by the end of year 2, and an additional 25 by the end of year 3.

Study Design:

  • We will identify two comparison counties for each of our intervention counties
  • One comparison county will be part of the Ohio START program but not part of the ECI program
  • The other comparison county will be one that has no major grants to address substance use-related child welfare families

There will be two key takeaways from this design. The first being, we will be able to assess the effects of the combined program interventions (ECI+START). And secondly, we can assess the independent effects of the additional programming provided as part of the ECI intervention.

Measures:

  • Using our Needs Portal, we will measure the outreach and recruitment activities as these data will be inputted in the portal. When possible, the attendees will complete brief surveys on demographics and type of substance use which will allow us to determine the best match between peer recovery supporters and child welfare families.
  • OhioMHAS already collects information on participants in their trainings. We will determine a baseline and then assess how the locations of the trainings are related to an increase in certified peer recovery supporters.
  • We have access to OhioMHAS public database that reports the number of certified peer recovery supporters. In conjunction with our Needs Portal, we will be able to determine the number of peer recovery supporters that have been matched with child welfare families.
