External committee members and Optional fourth members

External committee members (Third “required” member)

A student can opt to request a non-OSU college of nursing faculty member as a third committee member if approved by their advisor. The applicant should have a doctoral degree (does not have to be in nursing) and a strength/expertise to add to the success of the Final DNP project. This might be a content expert, organizational leader, or EBP/QI expert.  For students utilizing external members for their DNP final project team, please complete the External Team Member Form in Beacon no later than the first 4 weeks of the term prior to the term of the submission of the Professional Examination. Please confirm the external member has not already been approved on the Faculty Roles table as External (aka AUTHorized) members.

A copy of the proposed external member’s resume/CV and a letter of support from their direct supervisor is also required (unless they work for the OSU-CON). If the advisor indicates approval, a copy of the external members’ resume/CV, and letter of support shall be submitted to the Chair of the DNP Subcommittee for recommendation before going for approval to Graduate Studies Committee via the GSC Chair and then the Grad School for approval. Completion of the form does not guarantee approval from the Graduate School. It will take the entire term to get approval from the Grad School.

Optional fourth committee member

If someone is intended to serve on a single committee (often an organizational expert who does not have EX status but can be anyone deemed appropriate by student/advisor with a terminal degree), the student will need to initiate the “Committee and Examination Petition” (found in Gradforms) and include the optional fourth member’s resume/CV, at least 4 weeks prior to the date of the exam. This does not need CON committee approvals.

Please note that the optional fourth member cannot take the place of one of the required three members.

***As a general FYI: If someone is approved as an Authorized (AUTH) “external member”, they can serve on multiple committees going forward from that point.  If someone wants to participate and do not have EX status (AUTH), the Committee and Examination petition must be approved, and that person can serve as an additional (4th) member on that committee.
