Welcome to Discovering Albania!

This online module serves as an informative introduction to the history, culture, and language of Albania, or as the country is called in the language, Shqipëria. Located in Southeast Europe along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, and sharing its borders with Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Greece, Albania is country with a rich history, diverse population, fascinating culture, and delicious cuisine.

To navigate this module and learn about Albania, simply click on the theme links on the left of the screen and begin your journey. At the bottom of the main history section you will find a quiz and suggested course exercises to do with your students in addition to resources for further reading and information.

Learning Sections

History (Historia)

This section is divided into three categories and introduces students to the long and rich history of Albania. Be sure to look at the key terms and take the history quiz once all three history categories have been completed.

Language (Gjuhe)

Here students will get a crash course in the Albanian language that introduces them to the basics, such as the alphabet, counting, and essential grammar. A learning objective for this section can be to memorize the alphabet and be able to count to 10.

Food (Ushqim)

Have you ever wondered what type of food people eat in Albania? In this section students will be introduced to the traditional cuisine of Albania. There are also links to recipes and tutorials for anyone who wants to try making a traditional Albanian dish.

Music (Muzikë)

Albania has a long history with music and there are internationally recognized music styles that have been developed in the country. Students will not only learn about traditional and popular music in Albania, but they will also have an opportunity to learn about specific instruments, as well as watch a video of Albanian folk dancing.

Travel and Tourism (Udhëtimi dhe Turizmi)

The final section of this learning module will introduce students to the regional and natural diversity of Albania that attracts millions of tourists every year. From nature parks and pristine beaches to ancient ruins and medieval castles, Albania has something for everyone to explore.

 

About the Author

Dr. Christopher Kinley received his PhD from the Department of History at The Ohio State University. He specializes in the modern history of Southeast Europe with a particular focus on Albania and Greece.
